Rhododendrons were resplendent throughout Lexington on an otherwise overcast, post-Comedy Night Monday as Pres. Murry welcomed 25 Lexington Rotarians and 2 guests who were today’s speakers.  Yours truly led the Pledge (only for the flag), song maestro Charlie V a 1st verse of America, and PP Dan S the invocation (no mention of Red Sox until we reach .500).

Happy Dollars were paid by PP Jim F for attending a Fenway game with 100-year-old Brookhaven resident Charlie Hogan, who threw out the first ball and somehow made Jim feel young again; Lexington Ace’s Bob C paid for Smiles By Design PP Dave B buying a grill, or was it a drill?  PP Spencer B attempted to fine PP Leo M in absentia for a laudatory piece in The Colonial Times, but the Club voted PP Spencer pay it if Leo didn’t, so, Leo, fuhgeddahboutit!

PP Doug H’s Happy Dollars for a grandson’s birthday were drowned out by the roar of 500 motorcycles that showed up for PP Bob O’s annual fundraiser for cancer in New Hampshire.  Michelle G cooled her engines, donating $40 of her Comedy Night Raffle take.

PP John O said he woke up Saturday morning calling himself an “idiot” (his wife rolled over, said she couldn’t agree more) and then he added, for forgetting to thank PP Nick C (and Nancy) for the beautiful Impatiens centerpieces at hilarious Comedy Night that, once again, was a sell-out success:  300 tickets, record numbers of ads in the Comedy Night Program orchestrated by PP John O and published by PP Bob S; $2,000 in raffle tickets sold.  After Pres Murry attempted to answer Comedian Tony V’s question:  “What does Lexington Rotary do?” Tony said, “I see.  You just keep going around in circles, and when you get to Europe, you have to go backwards.”

Upcoming Events:  May 28 Memorial Day ─ Ice Cream for Veterans event at the VA co-sponsored by Concord, Bedford and Lexington Rotary; May 29 ─ Sports Night at Lexington High School; June 4 ─ High School Scholarships meeting for the Club. ─ June 1-3  District Spring Conference which Pres Murry is attending at Foxwoods or Foxboro or both.  June 25 ─ Dave S President’s Induction meeting announced by Dominic S after his being fined for confusing the odd couple PP “Doug” Busa and PP “Dan” Holmes.  Although he will soon be forgotten but not gone, kudos to Pres. Murry for a most enthusiastic and successful year.

Raffle Donations:  Lexington Ace Hardware, Patriot Community Bank; Encharter Insurance; Walpole Community Bank; Lexington Periodontics.

ImageSpeakers were Buzz Gillology,Image President, and Joe Dini, Treasurer, of the Massachusetts Air and Space Museum.  Joe was warmly greeted as a former Lexington
Rotarian and School Committee member.  The Museum offers a comprehensive view of Massachusetts’s important contributions to aviation and aerospace.  It will be a private museum, 501C(3) Non-Profit Corporation, leasing 200,000 sf on 17 acres at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, with proposed new building construction and promises to be an important educational, historical and cultural asset.

The 50/50 Raffle for $60 was won by this scribe.  Words escape me.  I can only quote those of Comedian Artie Januario, a former Lexington pharmacist, who whispers to his wife these three most heartfelt words:  “Don’t stab me.”

Cheers ─ PP Ed G.
