Speaker:
Today's speaker was also or host, Sheila Butts, Director of the newly developed Lexington Community Center. Originally from NJ, Sheila now lives in Newton. Sheila was employed by the Town of Lexington in the recreation department which was relocated to the Community Center upon it's completion along with the Human Services Dep. and the Senior Center (formerly at Muzzey Condos). The mission of the Community Center is to enhance the quality of life for all Lexington residents. The Community Center has been open for 8 months and has seen over 58,000 people pass through the front doors to date. Some 22,000 people have signed up for scheduled programs throughout the 3 departments of service. Already, there is a space crunch for use in the new fitness center, with, currently, 68 programs underway. There have been over 3,500 people registered to play in the Rotary Club of Lexington funded Billiards Room with teams formed to play matches in the regional Seniors Billiard League. (Who knew?) The Center also works in collaboration with many Lexington programs such as LABBB, Specialty Arts Program and Morning Crafts program. Click the link for all the info on the center; http://www.lexingtonma.gov/lexington-community-center. At the conclusion of Sheila's talk, the Rotarians were invited on a tour of the facilities.
