PP Bill Cassell Gives the Club His Classification Talk.

As we gathered for our second meeting at the Lexington Golf Club, President Susan called the meeting to order on a beautiful day in the 70s. The view of the golf course was spectacular! A wonderful breakfast fare consisted of very tasty egg sandwiches with sausage, scrambled eggs , bacon, baked goodies, cereals, fruits, yogurt, juices and coffee. 18 Rotarians plus one guest, for a total of 19, were in attendance. Pledge of Allegiance was led by PP Spencer B, First Verse of America by PP Dan O, and the Invocation by PP Murry A.

Happy dollars were donated by the following: PP Spencer B, for a wonderful week's vacation at a lake with his family, and also in honor of his father's-in-law recent retirement, Charlie V, for his 52nd wedding anniversary, and another donation for his recent retirement, PP Domenic, for his 35th wedding anniversary tomorrow, PP Dan O, for a great vacation in Pennsylvania – no golfing!, and PP Bill C, being kind enough to match whatever Connie N had donated on a 5 to 1 ratio, donated five dollars.

Announcements: President Susan said there will be a club committee discussions next week, so be prepared. President Sue read thank you notes recently received  by the  club on behalf of recipients Rachel Lloyd and Robin Detweiler.

Seven (7) day notice – Terry Wilkins, visiting with us today, will be inducted into the RCOL next week.

Our speaker for the day was PP Bill C. As we all know, Bill is a 3rd grade teacher at the Batchelder School in North Reading. He spoke about puzzles, problem-solving, and brainteasers. These are considered to be outside-the-box problems, and Bill feels this helps children to develop their thinking process and skills beyond strictly school subject problem solving matters, and creates a sense of accomplishment. Good physical things happen also. The sense of accomplishment the students feel turns on the release of the biochemical dopamine from the brain, which gives that good feeling. It certainly is fortunate for the students to have PP Bill as a teacher, and to make them each experience self-esteem as a result of accomplishment, in this case problem-solving. Bill gave several examples of problem-solving: the Titanic Story – how could more passengers have been saved? Also, Don't Text While Driving - bad things can happen that you may have to solve. Crossing the Bridge, The Desk Lamp on the Wall were other examples. In each of these situations, a problem arose and had to be solved. When PP Bill challenged the club as to what was the solution in each, we actually did very well. Be proud of ourselves, fellow Rotarians!

The 50-50 raffle was won by PP Domenic. Our meeting was then adjourned.

Until  next week,
PP Murry A
