PP Dan Olsen Gives Classification Talk

On a hot, beautiful last August day, 16 Rotarians and 2 guests gathered for the usual delicious feast of Caesar salad, cold cuts, pasta casserole, and cookies.

PP Dave S. led the pledge of Allegiance. PSaA Charlie V. guided us in the first verse of America and PP Bill C. gave a moving invocation. PP Dan O. started us in the Welcome Song.

PP Dave S. donated happy dollars for his vacation on the Cape from which he left early, to return home to paint his bathroom, only to find the new tile had been laid incorrectly!

  • PP Dave fined Pres. Domenic for incorrectly referring to the 1st VP as the 2nd VP. Pres. Domenic   seemed a little confused, but paid! PP Dave then fined bulletin editor PP Jim F. for his “dis-encouraging and disrespectful” reporting of his classification talk a few weeks back. Some mention of yawning?  He also included PP Dan B. as an accessory for his addition of photos.
  • PP Bob S. fined Allan A. for his bulletin errors including the misspelling of PP Murry A.’s first name and for missing some PPs along the way! PP Bob S. paid the fine. He just wanted to be heard.
  • Connie N. paid $20.00 for her vacation to Ireland with her son. She enjoyed five days of pub crawls?
  • PP Dan B. fined PP Doug H. as the bulletin never arrived.
  • PP Spencer B. paid happy dollars because the world did not end as some of his clients had thought.
Pres. Domenic acknowledged a letter from Sayin Shute thanking the club for her scholarship assistance.

PP Bill C. showed all a picture of what looked like Marilyn Monroe, only to reveal on closer inspection that it was Albert Einstein. It’s always fun with PP Bill! He also thanked PP Dan B. and PP Doug H. for identifying the members of the club in a photo from 1979.

The raffle gifts today were donated by Patriot Community Bank, Arlex Oil, Walpole Cooperative Bank and PP Bill C.

Our speaker was PP Dan O., giving a classification talk on changes in dentistry. He started by asking “Does anyone know what a dentist does for a living?” He was met with blank stares and silence. With his work cut out for him, PP Dan then dove in to enlighten and inform the club with a scintillating presentation.

PP Dan said he had wanted to be a dentist since he was five years old. His father was a dentist and currently nine members of his family are dentists.

PP Dan attended Rutgers, where he received his degree in bio-science. He then attended University of Buffalo to earn a degree in dentistry. He was honored to be asked to join the faculty there, where he worked for four years.

In 1993, PP Dan bought past Rotarian Bill Way’s practice. He also joined RCOL that year. (PP Dan joined the Lexington Golf Club in 1996 for $400.00, which has kept him golfing ever since.)

PP Dan told us of one big change in dentistry since 1973, the reduced use of silver amalgam (which contains mercury). The use of silver fillings reduced by 75%. The new materials are now are better, stronger and prettier. Back then the standard procedure was often to extract teeth, make dentures and periodontal disease was difficult to treat. Resin bonding has completely changed the profession. This is a plastic material used for filling that actually bonds to teeth. This also changed how braces were applied to teeth and is used for restoration.

Back in the early 1960’s, a Swedish orthopedic surgeon was using titanium pins. They were then used for the first implants. Before this, stainless steel pins were used and very painful to remove.  Finally, after almost twenty years, in the 1980’s, the FDA approved the use of titanium in dentistry, which changed everything.
The use of cad cam systems over the last thirty years changed the time of many procedures from three or four visits to twenty minutes. The restoration is designed by the computer which then instructs the manufacturing of the necessary dental work.

Digital X-rays and digital photography have done away with those awful cardboard films of years past. The clarity is better and the computer sensors more precise. This has also opened doors to better orthodontic procedures.

Lastly, PP Dan spoke of the biggest change in dentistry, periodontics. This is the area of the most breakthroughs. Soft tissue grafting, creating bone and grafting bone have improved periodontics immensely.
PP Dan told us many questioned his purchase of a computer for his office back in 1983, but he could not run a practice today without it. During PP Dan O’s provocative and exciting presentation, PP Bob S sounded his raffle prize, the screaming monkey. He said he was following directions on the toy, “Remove tag”. PP Murry paid the five dollar fine as he liked the “cute monkey sound”.

PP Bob S. won the 50/50 raffle with ticket #450 for $40.00.
