Peg Doyle Author, Speaker, Nutrition Coach, Speaks to Rotary “Wellness and You ─ Simple Steps for Lifelong Wellness”

On a crisp, sunny Fall day, President Susan welcomed 22 Lexington Rotarians and two guests at the Lexington Golf Club where Patty’s tasty buffet included hot and cold luncheon delights, plus dessert for those sugar tolerant.  PP Dominic led the Pledge, for allegiance first, and later for reduced sugar.  New member Teri W. inspired a first verse of America that was actually harmonious.  PDG Jack M.’s pithy invocation required no prayers amidst the rolling thunder of our Red Sox and Patriots.

Sounding like the Four Tops singing “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch,” the Club hit a sweet spot with the Welcome Song.  PP song master Dan O. paid happy dollars for the best first verse of America and Welcome Song he had ever heard, despite crowd mutterings at his tin ear.

President Susan passed the sugar and kudos to 3rd VP Megan M for outstanding efforts at Club BBQs for Greeley Village and Countryside senior residents.  PP Dan B. paid what happy dollars he had left after dinner at the Chatham Bars Inn, likely just desserts for anyone owning wine and spirits, but who is counting anyway.

PP Spencer B. donated happy dollars chump change left over from the Vet’s bill for an emergency cat procedure; candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.

It was nice to see longtime member and loyal supporter of our Club, Doug H., who is dealing with serious health issues, with his daughter and guest, Deidre, from Vermont, both of whom generously donated happy sawbucks to our coffers.  We wish Doug all the best.

President Susan announced upcoming events with details to follow:  Nov 5: Harvest Social at the home of PP and SSgt at Arms DM; Nov 6: Stop Hunger Now.  Note next week’s regular Monday meeting is at Brookhaven at Lexington, and not at LGC.

Raffle gifts were donated by Walpole Coop Bank and President Susan.  Our queen bee is off to a stellar start in her presidential year.  Plenty of sugar, enough spice and everything nice.

This scribe was just finishing Patty’s tiramisu, and eyeing the chocolate chips for a chaser, when PP Murray A., apparently healed from flapping gum disease, gave a brief introduction of our speaker, Peg Doyle, a nutrition counselor.

Peg has written a book, available from Amazon, Food Becomes You; and authors a newsletter, “Wellness and You ─ Simple Steps for Lifelong Wellness”; her website is www.wellnessandyou.com .  She spoke of our sugar addicted society; 75% Medicare costs are sugar-related such as diabetes and are accompanied by life styles marked by poor nutrition and lack of movement; she concluded that eating healthy eliminates dieting for good and the goal is to live long and die short.  This all sounded good to me; a piece of cake, no problem.

The 50/50 raffle bestowed $60 more sweets for one of our sweetest, 2nd VP Michele G.  Those bankers, like bees to honey.

In closing, just remember what Sam Levinson said:  “Lead us not into temptation.  Just tell us how to get there ─ we’ll find it.”
