On a very warm and sunny afternoon, 28 (if you count those that came in after the bell…) Rotarians and 43 visitors came together for our scholarship luncheon.  We enjoyed chicken pot pie, salad and sandwiches.  The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by PP Jim F; the first verse of America was led by PSAA Charlie V, and invocation by PDG Jack M.

Our guests were all introduced with students and parents from four schools and faculty from all three Lexington high schools in attendance.  Happy Dollars were flowing fast and furious.  Julie gave happy dollars for the 10th anniversary of Fitness Together.  PP Dave E and PP Dan B both gave money for Busa Wine & Spirits Night of Crime that took place last week.  PE Dave S gave happy dollars to thank the Scholarship Committee.  PP Dave Sears was happy for having a student preparing to attend his alma mater, SUNY Cobleskill University (yes, it does exist).  PP Bob O had an excellent time on his annual motorcycle weekend raising over $40K for breast and ovarian cancer research.  SAA Connie paid for a birthday and a trip with her son.  Pres. Jim was being very careful about mentioning his place of business to avoid a fine, but PP Nick stepped up and promoted the “Best Magazine in Lexington” (Seems like the paper should get higher praise than that…), The Colonial Times.

Upcoming Events

  • Monday May 26th – Memorial Day – NO MEETING
  • Monday May 27th – Sports Night (we need volunteers to attend!)
  • Friday May 30th – Comedy Night
  • Monday June 2nd – Board Meeting

Raffle gifts were donated by the following fine establishments and were all won by students (and a couple of moms): Edward Jones Investments, Rotary Club of Lexington, Eagle Bank, Arlex Oil, Vail Studios, Patriot Community Bank, Lexington Periodontics, Encharter Insurance and Doug Holmes.

President Jim spoke briefly about the roles of the Rotary Club of Lexington and Rotary International in the community and throughout the world.  The R presented 17 scholarships to students from four schools.  There were 4 students from Lexington Christian, 9 from Lexington High, 3 from Minuteman and one Lexington resident attending Buckingham Browne & Nichols.  The students all spoke briefly letting the club know where they were going on to school, what they will be studying and why they chose that course of study.  There was some extremely minor confusion by PE Dave S who paid a fine for missing one student even with the extremely organized manner in which Treasurer Donna set up the checks.  The meeting ended with some recognition of Kate Young in the form of happy dollars by LCA Head of School Tim Russell for her excellent work with the students.

The 50/50 raffle was won by PP Dave E for $85.
