August 27th was a perfect summer day. So perfect that most of the club members were apparently sunning themselves on a beach. Seventeen pale sun-sensitive Rotarians gathered for a luncheon of Caesar salad, steak and rice at Waxy O’Connor’s. The pledge of allegiance was led by Domenic S, one verse of America by PP Bob S and song leader in training Kerri R and the Invocation by PP Bill C. While it cost us all a dollar, it was worth it not to have to sign the welcome song.

PP Spencer B had happy dollars for yet another business junket, this time to San Diego and more happy dollars for surviving a day at Story Land with his kids. SAA Connie N was happy that she and the town of Lexington survived a summer with her son and was extra happy that there was still money in her wallet (to give to the club) after he left. PP Bill C fined himself for not being able to attend the 300th birthday celebration of Lexington event on September 22nd at Hastings Park. PP “how do I shut off my phone” Bob S would have paid a fine if he’d brought money. I’m sure that SAA Connie will make him atone for his sins at the next meeting.

Upcoming Events:

  • September 17th the District Governor Terri Kidder will be visiting. The Board of Directors will meet with the DG prior to the meeting. There will be a meeting of the Rotary Charitable Trust following the meeting.
  • September 22nd is the town’s birthday celebration kick-off at Hastings Park. The event runs from 11-4. Kerri R is heading a committee to organize our involvement in the event. We will have a booth with information about Rotary and will hand out water and balloons. This is an excellent opportunity to show the community what we do for the town and hopefully attract new members. All members are strongly encouraged to attend for at least part of the day.

Raffle donations were made by Ace Hardware and Smiles by Design.

We did not have a speaker, but Pres David spoke about the need to attract new members and encouraged every member to bring at least one guest (potential member) to a meeting during the course of the year. He also encouraged members to visit the “member access” portion of the RI website and join the LinkedIn groups related to Rotary. These groups can also be found from the LinkedIn website. Pres David also met with the new Veteran Services Officer for Lexington, Brian Lennon. Brian will be one of our speakers in September and he is planning an event to recognize local veterans for their service to the country. Pres David is hoping that we can find ways to work with Brian to advance his goals.

Secretary Susan C reminded everyone that the back to school shopping season has begun and what better way to do your shopping than through the Amazon link on our Rotary club website (rotarycluboflexington.org). Every purchase means money for our charitable work. You don’t need to belong to the club to use this link. Spread the word!

The 50:50 raffle was for $55 and was won by PP Dan O.

There is no meeting next week due to the Labor Day holiday. See you all on September 10th.
