Bob Gaudreau speaks to Rotary about the Shen Yun Symphony.

It was a very welcome warm, sunny day when the Rotary Club of Lexington gathered for its weekly meeting.  This week it was graciously hosted by PP Jim Freehling at Brookhaven at Lexington.

The luncheon was a spectacular and abundant assortment of finely prepared sandwiches, Chicken Piccata, fresh asparagus and Brookhaven’s own signature potato chips (they should sell them.  I’d be a customer).  There was also a dessert table with several delicious choices (I liked the pecan pie).  The choice of beverage was water for the health conscience, lemonade for the flavor conscience and ice tea for those who needed mid-day caffeine.

The bell was rung with the usual attention to punctuality by PP/CSA Don.

The group, small but hearty, stood to recite the pledge of allegiance which was led by PP Dominic, followed by one verse of America led by PP Spencer.  The thoughtful invocation was led by PP Nick.  The welcome song was enthusiastically led by PSA Charlie (even his enthusiasm couldn’t help today).

Even though we were at a different location and it was Rosh Hashanah (Happy New year), we were joined by 16 Lexington Rotarians, 1 visiting Rotarian and 2 guests for a nice round total of 20 (told you I don’t like math).  I wonder if anyone went to the golf club….

Raffle gifts were generously donated by:
  • Eagle Bank
  • Peoples United Bank
  • PP Jim Freehling and Brookhaven
  • (I believe there was a 4th.  Please accept my apologies for writing slowly and illegibly and having a terrible memory)

A Cornucopia of Happy dollars were given by:
  • PP Jim Freehling #1, for having the Rotarians there today and #2, the Brookhaven project working out with the town of Lexington.
  • PP Spencer in honor of his son Ryan’s 6th birthday today
  • Visiting Cambridge Rotarian and Brookhaven resident Ben Wright for joining us
  • PP Nick for an interesting casino / people watching trip.  (He advises to save your next Twin Rivers trip for a time other than the afternoon)
  • PP Doug for his sister Sally’s visit from San Diego
  • Treasurer Donna because people donated for October birthdays and for her son Christopher’s confirmation
  • Finally, PP/CSA Don for having the ability to make change yet again without any complications.

Fees, fines and taxes were paid and suggested by:
  • PSA Charlie proposed a self-imposed fine.  Apparently he plead guilty but is keeping the infraction a secret.  Isn’t there a legal term for that?  Hmmmm.
  • PP/CSA Don waived the table with no guest fine.  Figures, I sat at the table with 2.
Today’s Announcements were:
  • NP Lori announced that the Thanksgiving Basket Delivery on November 23rd will be conducted in conjunction with the Lexington Youth Commission.  All help will be appreciated.  Please contact her for details.
  • NNP Michelle said the cash raffle tickets are selling like hotcakes, which means they will be in high demand very soon.  She still has a few in hand, so get them before it’s too late.
  • President Susan had two announcements.  On November 5th there will be a Harvest Social graciously presented at the palatial home of PP Don Martini.  Guests are expected to arrive at 5PM.  An invitation will be going out with more precise information such as expected formal attire, where to park, WHERE NOT TO PARK etc.
  • And on November 6th, the Stop Hunger Now project which was so successful and enjoyable last year will be held at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 55 Coolidge Ave. with a tentative start time of 2PM.  All Lexington Rotarians are encouraged to attend both events.  Stay tuned for confirmation of time.
  • NO MEETING NEXT MONDAY, OCTOBER 10TH in observance of Columbus Day.
  • OCTOBER 17th the weekly meeting will be held at Minuteman High School.
Today’s Guest Speaker:

Our speaker today was Bob Gaudreau.  Not only did he give a dynamic, fast paced, entertaining and informative multimedia presentation about the Shen Yun Symphony performance coming up on October 21st at Boston’s Symphony Hall, he brought, set up and broke down all of his own A/V equipment.  He told me he was a boy scout and is always prepared.  It was much appreciated.  For more information on the Shen Yun Symphony, or any Shen Yun performance, go to ShenYun.com.

The 50/50 raffle was won today by NP Lori who was feeling lucky today, clearly for good reason.  She had the winning number 490, and won the respectable sum of $35.

The meeting came to a punctual close.  Looking forward to the meeting at Minuteman.
