Town of Lexington Engineering Dept. Head John Livesy Speaks to Rotary

It was a cool, crisp Halloween day meeting that was held at the Lexington Golf Club on October 31st, 2016.

The group of 22 Rotarians and our guest speaker enjoyed roast beef, potatoes, steamed broccoli, cold cuts, green salad, cookies and fruit salad.

The pledge of allegiance was led by PP Domenic, PP Ed did a particularly lousy job of leading us in the 1st verse of America and Past District Governor, Jack delivered a touching invocation.

Happy dollars were given by PP Dan B in the amount of $100 because his eldest, Rebecca got married last weekend in Jackson Hole, WY at the Wort Hotel all for the love of health insurance and her new husband John Koenig! PP Dan O gave happy dollars for his recent 2 week vacation in Europe which included a Mediterranean Cruise. PP Domenic gave happy Halloween birthday dollars in celebration of himself. PP Jim S gave $20.00 for his ability to attend today's meeting, PP Murry gratefully gave $20.00 because PP Dan O is back and he won't need to lead the welcome song any longer. In addition, PP Nick and PP Don M gave happy dollars but the room was too noisy to hear what for!

Raffle gifts were donated by Eagle Bank, SVN/Connie Neville and People's United Bank. All were given by the winners to our guest speaker, John Livsey.

In addition, President Susan gave $10.00 Happy Dollars because the birthday boy, PP Domenic was able to tell all of us about the 3 upcoming Rotary events this weekend (without any notes!) Said events are the Veteran's Breakfast on Saturday from 8:00-11:00 at St. Brigid's Church, the Harvest Social at PP Don Martini's home in Bedford on Saturday evening from 6:30-???, Please remember to bring either a side dish, salad  or a dessert and whatever you wish to drink. Don and his lovely wife Laurie will be providing the main course. We will conclude this Rotary trifecta on Sunday afternoon at the Pilgrim Church from 2:00-4:30 when we will be assisting with a pack out for those in the military.

Our speaker was John Livsey, Town of Lexington Head Engineer with degrees from U Mass in Lowell. John brought us a slide program with a sampling of projects underway in the Town. John explained that the DPW Engineering Department has 8 professionals and they design, manage and supervise horizontal infrastructure improvement projects, in other words, pipes, catch basins, culverts, and dams and roads, basically everything on or under ground that you don't know is there until something bad happens! John also explained that his department is proactive and models these systems to learn about and schedule areas that need to be replaced. Despite his desire to avoid the subject of the Harrington Rd and lane closures in the Center our poor guest was dragged into conversations about both. Fortunately, for Mr. Livsey, the results of the study on both of those controversial experiments are not due until next week. We were made aware that the DPW Engineers are involved with, and critical to, the many, many town projects that improve our roads and sidewalks and preserve safe waste treatment and storm water quality for our Town.

At the very end of our meeting, a visiting Rotarian  from Thailand arrived and presented President Susan with a banner from her home club.

The $60.00, 50/50 Raffle was won by PP Bob S.

Respectfully submitted,
Connie N.
