Club Assembly - Topic "Rotary Club of Lexington - What's in Our Future?"
Mar 06, 2017
PP Dan Olsen has some exciting ideas about trying to increase membership, getting more of the young people involved and to want to accept leadership roles in the club, perhaps making the club more enticing to join, and is overall very enthusiastic about the club. As a club, he feels we need to develop that feeling. Although we all know that, Dan definitely has some ideas about how to get the club to "grab the bull by the horns" and to hopefully stop the attrition, and go in the opposite direction – growth. It will be work. As a club, we must all be in this thing together. Dan has some ideas about forming a committee or committees, as need be, to get the above going and accomplished. He is very excited about his future second term as President. In speaking with him, I think his enthusiasm for the future of the club is very contagious. I would love for Dan to share his ideas with all of us. We have to start the movement now. The meeting - he would like to speak and then let there be an open forum, so that anyone and everyone can speak up. |

UBECI – United to Benefit Ecuadorian Children, International
Apr 03, 2017
UBECI is a non-profit, non-government organization in Ecuador that works daily to ensure a better future for Ecuadorian youth. UBECI programs serve low-income children and their families in Quito, Ecuador and surrounding rural areas. We are staffed with individuals who are experienced in social work and education. We provide educational services, recreational activities, and social support to at-risk Ecuadorian children and adolescents. Our mission is to implement programs that benefit children who work on the streets, markets, and rural areas of Quito. These programs promote healthy development of skills and ideals regarding education, social interaction, gender equality, hygiene, health, self-esteem, affection, and family involvement. Long-term, we hope to create a community center at which the children can interact and learn in a safe, nurturing environment. |

Watertown Police Captain - How to Protect and Serve in the Modern Day
Apr 13, 2017
Captain Ray Dupuis of the Watertown Police Department. Captain Depuis has lectured all over the country about what occurred in Watertown as it relates to the Boston Marathon Bombing of Monday, April 15, 2013. I asked Ray to relate that incident to what this country has always stood for and still does, and how the Watertown Police Department became so outstanding in the modern day in protecting the citizenry and our country, but which all began with the American Revolutionary War, and the brave militia men in Lexington and Concord. He will explain exactly what his own role was that very day and the following days in which Watertown became involved. |

One Person’s Story of Becoming a Super-Citizen-Advocate
Jun 12, 2017
Bob O'Hara felt like most Americans watching the political system in 2011. Living in the Boston area, with no political experience, he was frustrated at the level of discord, but also wondering what he could do about it. When the bipartisan group NoLabels was founded to address the problems of gridlock in government, he wanted to get involved. But again, like many Americans, he didn't know much about grassroots advocacy. He came to a NoLabels conference in Washington, D.C. later that year. The conference had many expert speakers on policy, what was causing gridlock, how many in Congress were equally if not more frustrated.
During the course of this journey, Bob has seen the power of dialogue on difficult questions on a local level, and now serves on the board of directors for Essential Partners, a nonprofit that equips leaders and communities to speak and listen to each other across our deepest divisions. Bob has also become his own one-man-show in preaching the value of in-district meetings with legislators. "I couldn't believe how easy it was to get meetings," he said. (A CMF survey of House Chiefs of Staff showed that 71 percent felt their Member had "no preference" on whether he/she met with constituents in the district or D.C.) He continues to face skepticism from his friends, but now he's got both data and experience on his side.
