It was a lovely afternoon for our Monday zoom meeting. There were 13 Lexington rotarians present and Assistant District Governor Amy graced us with her warm presence and welcome enthusiasm. She encouraged us to register for the Virtual District Installation and also to be checking the District website for updates and changes to events. Link to register below: After his helpful daughter got PP Bob Cunningham’s audio working, he gave $20 happy dollars because none of the current members of the club have caught the COVID. PP Murray gave $20 in support of his brother in law, Bob Savage, who has been valiantly fighting the virus. Even though we couldn’t have our annual Comedy Night fundraiser, we have selected and are funding 10 scholarships to local seniors: 7 from LHS, 2 from Minuteman, 1 from LCA. We’re looking forward to getting to meet these great kids (virtually) and hearing about their plans for the future! The lighting project that we sponsored to support the graduating class of 2020 is up on the gazebo at Hastings Park and looks great. Take a look tonight! I’m happy to report that we completed our first successful donation drive today to benefit the Lexington Food Pantry. I had a Jeep-load full of food donations and a nice check for $1325.00 to present to the organization. Thank you so, so much for your participation! Here is shot of Arianna Cardillo and I dropping off the big score to the Food Pantry 😊👍😊 Hoping everyone stays healthy and happy. Please reach out to fellow members if you need anything at all, even if it’s just a call for a quick chat! 💚Meaghan Murphy

Our First Virtual Meeting During Uncertain Times |
Before I go on, please understand that I took the notes by hand on the spur of the moment. While everything I wrote made sense to me at the time, even I have trouble reading my own chicken scratch. So please keep an open mind. It was a lovely Monday morning, pleasant and warm. The sun was shining brightly, the birds were singing, and all seemed right with the world…. except for the pandemic. PP Dan B invited everyone to follow the link to Zoom. One by one, people showed up. Pres. Dan brought the meeting to order. PP / Secretary Frank gave the attendance. Today, 19 hearty Rotarians gathered in friendship and isolation for an historic meeting in cyberspace, for the first time in history! We had people in their homes, people in their cars, people on a cyber beach and even the Golden Gate Bridge, all gathered in the name of service above self. Today’s cuisine… we had no food (although I had Kowloon leftovers before the meeting), but the meeting was still good. There was plenty of banter to go around. PP/Treas/Etc. Dan B. offered a donation so PP Murry wouldn’t sing the welcome song by himself. Fortunately, we had no guests and, he forgot the words anyway (we think, PP Dan Muted him). Fines/Happy Dollars: - PP/T/E Dan gave 20 happy dollars because Busa Wine & Spirits is considered essential and still open!! And, through all the difficulty, we still had the ability to meet, albeit on Zoom. But meet we did.
- PP Murry gave 5 happy dollars because all the members attending were well. He offered to send a check, but at that point someone asked if we took donations by Venmo (I suggest you google that. I can’t help you.) PP Dan thought it was a good idea, whatever it is. Probably more technology I don’t want to learn. (As of this publication we are still working on it.)
- Pres. Dan paid happy dollars for the 2 successful Zoom board meetings we’ve had so far this month, and for all the Zoom meetings yet to come…..Stay tuned.
Announcements: - PP/S Frank talked about Sand for Seniors. We’re schedule to do a pickup of the buckets between 5/23 and 5/31. PP/T/E Dan sent out an invitation for volunteers to pick up buckets and drop the off at Brookhaven. Please respond if you haven’t already.
- PP/P on Deck Spencer talked about our new Rotary face masks. Rotary Lexington ordered and received 500 masks. They were made in the USA and are washable. 5 masks will be sent out to every Lexington Rotarian today. Please use one and give the rest to family and friends or anyone you know in need of a mask. They have a great Rotary logo on them. It will be great publicity for Rotary. Masks have already been distributed to the Police and Fire Dept., Town Hall and the DPW. As of our meeting, we have approx. 275 left. If you have anyone that needs them, please contact PP/P on deck Spencer.
- PP Dan B talked about gift cards. We purchased 100 - $10 gift cards from Neillios. They were distributed evenly to the Police, Fire and DPW. You do the math. And, we would ordered 100 more and distribute them the same way plus the Lexington Food Pantry.
- We received a text from Suzy Barry. She’s asking Rotary Lexington to help with a celebration for the LHS 2020 graduates. They want to hang a banner and Blue & Gold lights off the gazebo and asked us to participate (read pay for) in the project. The board approved.
- Meaghan M suggested that we offer masks and gift cards to the Lexington Food Pantry. Pres Dan O suggested either that and/or a financial contribution.
- Pres Dan O has taken over the scholarship program from PP Jim Freehling. We have 11 applications so far. We will continue taking apps until September 1, 2020. The scholarship applications are on the Rotary website.
- The installation meeting is scheduled for June 22nd. It will likely be a Zoom installation, but we can remain hopeful.
- Ken Wright followed by P Dan suggested anyone who wanted to could speak for a couple of minutes about how they are doing in this challenging time.
- Ken Wright talked about how fortunate he and his wife are. His practice is doing well during this time and they have their health.
- PP Don S talked about losing his brother to Coved 19. It was a difficult situation and the realities of the current situation made it worse. Our condolences.
At that point, the first cyber meeting of the Lexington Rotary was adjourned. Another one for the history books. Until next week, stay safe, calm and healthy. Best to all, SAA AAA

Sharon Gunda Lexington Human Services Outreach Coordinator and Director Melissa Interess Speak to Rotary |
The weather was sunny and unseasonably warm, but no one was complaining. The luncheon fare was once again catered due to Patty’s absence. Meals from local venues have been good. This was from Neillio’s, I’m told: chicken parm, assorted sandwiches, couscous platter, salad and cookies. The Pledge was led by Arianna. One verse of America was led by Pres. Dan, and the Invocation by PP Don S. Today’s attendance was 17 Rotarians, 1 visiting Rotarian, and 3 guests. PP Murray introduced Paul Thibeault, a regular visitor from the Burlington Club. One of the guests was Caryl Dlugy, whose business is “In Shape for Women” and who is the incoming Chair of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce. The other two guests were our speakers who came from the Lexington Human Services Department, Melissa Intress and Sharon Gunda. Happy Dollars were given by Steve because it was his 70th birthday that day. He was sung to by the club. PP Bob S objected because he had his 80th birthday last week without any fanfare, so the club dutifully obliged and sang to him also. Pres. Dan said this was the first time he ever remembered anyone being sung to. Other Happy Dollars were given by PDG Jack (I didn’t hear for what), Pres. Dan for his trip to Florida, and PP Dan B for Bill Tighe doing well recovering from health problems. Visiting Rotarian Paul T. was fined for his club having a Comedy Night one month before our Comedy Night. (They also scooped Tony V., but we still have him.) The Speakers were the Director of Lexington Human Services Melissa Interess and her co-worker, Outreach Coordinator Sharon Gunda. They reviewed the many services that Lexington residents have available to them, including senior services, youth and family services, veteran services and subsidized transportation services. Senior services include such things as classes, case management and counseling. Youth and family services include crisis intervention, support services, mental health referrals, and connection to resources for basic needs like fuel and food assistance. Lexington Human Services can assist veterans with benefits and financial assistance through State and local resources. Transportation services link those in need with senior taxis and alternative modes of transit. We are truly fortunate to have a Town Department that provides so many services and resources to residents. Their website has much more information www.lexingtonma.gov/human-services, or call 781-698-4840. Pres Dan Olsen and Sharon Gunda Closing announcements: - Don’t forget PP Lori is Polar Plunging this weekend. Donations are still welcome. 11 Interactors are joining her. If interested in attending to cheer them, transportation is leaving the Golf Club Parking Lot at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
- PP Dan reminds us that March Madness is coming up. Be sure to fill out your brackets as soon as they are available.
- Comedy Night is coming. Get your ads in for the booklet. See PP Michelle for auction item donations.
The 50/50 was won by Yanira. Winning number 810 in the amount of $50. Respectfully submitted by 70-yr-old SCK.

Soon after joining the Rotary club, he almost quit due to the President (PP John O’Donnell) at that time. This says it all…… Spencer was born in Greeley Colorado on a family farm and then moved to Acton, MA in 1978, just in time for the BLIZZARD. He attended Old Dominion University in Virginia, where he played soccer and studied physics. He is married with 2 children, and they all love to travel, play sports and coach sports. Spencer started working at Bickling Financial in 2000, a family owned business his mother had founded in 1984. He provides clients assistance with retirement income planning, cash flow management, college planning and 401K & IRA rollovers. VP Cleve C was lucky enough to win the 50/50 for $45 and generously donated the money to PP Lori for the Polar Plunge. PP Michelle G

Lexington Hosts Annual Joint Meeting With The Lions Club |
|
Monday turned out to be a fine day to host the Lexington Lions Club for a joint meeting of the powers to be of Lexington. Chef Patty created a magnificent lasting impression for our guests, having prepared a sumptuous meal to please even the pickiest of palates. (Many asked if we eat this way every week- of course we do.) The upbeat crowd of 21 Rotarians, 19 Lions, 1 Visiting Rotarian and 2 Guests did its best at singing and welcoming each other. The new “Pitch Pipe” idea was a total flop and should be used only for calling the dog in the future. Two tables were found to be delinquent with no Lions present. A just fine was promptly ordered and paid. Special guests of note present, were the Superintendent of the Lexington Schools Dr Julie Hackett and the proprietor of the new LaDolda Artisanal Pasta restaurant soon to open on Mass Ave in Lexington- Matteo Gallizio. A special “auction gift” of 2 Celtics tickets was offered by PP (Don’t call me Murray) Murry as well as the more reserved raffle gifts from S/T Dan, Spencer B, Arlex Oil and Patriot Bank NA. Happy dollars and fines were graciously offered by both Lions and Rotarians. Paul Jenkins of the Lions Club offered happy dollars in memory of his father Donald Jenkins who was a long time member of the Rotary Club and Lexington Golf Club. Our speaker for today was introduced as someone with an impressive list of accomplishments and experience over her 20 years before coming to the Lexington School System. Dr Julie Hackett jumped right into her job in July of 2018- in the midst of building/renovation projects, increasing enrollments and the need to redistrict some parts of town. She presented her approach to the job and its responsibilities in a very organized and inclusive way. Her tasks at hand include defining a strategic plan, creating a system wide master plan, determining the best redistricting solution with 2 new schools coming on line and managing the challenges of a $118M. Her presentation style, engaging personality and information rich conversation left everyone feeling like the Lexington School System has a very capable leader at the helm. No Meeting next Monday the 20th- MLK Jr Day. See you all on the 27th. PPDWM

2019 Holiday Luncheon |
|
On a cold and cloudy Monday, Santa landed his sled on the first tee of the Lexington Golf Club. We are so lucky he finds the time to come to visit us every year during this busy season. He was generous enough to collect donations for the MSPCA, an organization that works to help the lives of animals and create laws for their protection. Patty cooked us a fabulous holiday meal of delicious beef, mashed potatoes, Italian meatballs, green beans and Cesar salad for 21 hungry Rotarians and 31 guests. Santa’s favorite helper, PP Bob Sacco led us in the Pledge, PP Don Martini led us in the first verse of America, and PP Bob Cunningham led us in the saying of Grace. There were many happy dollars flowing around the party. - PP Dan Busa was understandably overjoyed to have his adorable first grandson Charles Daniel, his son, Andrew, and daughter in-law, Marybeth, and wife Jody joining us.

They put a new twist on traditional Christmas carols and were just we needed to kick of the season and get into the holiday spirit. Click on picture to see video. Thank you all for another fabulous year with the Rotary Club. I know we all feel very grateful for the community and support of this group. Raffle Donations were from Patriot Community Bank, AG Amy, Spencer Betts, Village Automotive, and Youville Place. Speaker On this special day we had speaker Becca Pizzi of Belmont Boosters, a runner from Belmont, Massachusetts. In 2016 she was the first American woman to complete the World Marathon Challenge, a series of seven marathons on seven continents in seven consecutive days, for which she holds the current record.[ She finished each race well ahead of all the other four women runners, and ahead of nine of the eleven men competitors. In 2018, she became the first woman to complete the World Marathon Challenge twice, again winning the women's overall race, and six of the seven individual marathons. We also had our guests from “Friends Forever International”. We had the opportunity to hear what “Friends Forever International” is about. “Friends Forever International” runs year-long youth empowerment and leadership programs for youth ages 15-17 from the United States, Northern Ireland, and the Middle East. Each participant is a part of a team of 10 youth who all go through the program together. The program is divided into 3 phases. The Team Building Phase happens in the youth's home country and prepares them for the short Skill Building Phase. The Skill Building Phase is an intense 2-week trip to the United States (if the youth are not American) or Northern Ireland (if the youth are American). This trip is full of workshops, volunteer service, and public speaking. When the teams return home, they enter the Community Building Phase, during which they develop and implement a Social Action Project which addresses a need in their community. Our group this year was from Northern Ireland. It was nice to see how Catholics and Protestants can get along peacefully and become friends when they are not influenced by adults who for many years have preached that each side should dislike the other. We can all learn a great lesson from the organization, “Friends Forever International”. President Dan O. rang the bell and our meeting was ended. 50/50 The 50/50 was by PP Spencer Respectfully submitted, PP Domenic Sicari

First Lunch at New Minuteman High School Many thanks to the Culinary Team |
|
On a warm sunny October day, President Dan opened the meeting at the new Minuteman Technical High School, in their new restaurant. This proved a great setting for a meeting, with wide open spaces and a glass wall facing outdoors. The Lexington Rotary Club was the first non school group to have a meal and meeting in this new setting. We also enjoyed better acoustics in this new room, especially for those Rotarians with less than perfect hearing! We had 17 Rotarians, 1 visiting Rotarian, and 13 guests, consisting of some school staff and the school Interact Club. Interact staff representative Connie Maynard was presented with a Rotary Polio Plus certificate, which included a dotation that will ensure that 61 children somewhere overseas will be given polio vaccine in Connie’s honor. Happy Dollars: A number of members gave happy dollars, including Pres. Dan O, PP Don S, PDG Jack M, PP Dan B and PP Spencer B. The main feature of the meeting was hearing from student members of the Interact club, and heard about some of their activities. They even joined the Rotary Club in the last Polar Plunge! They seem to be a select group of go getters- knowing how to get things done. We also heard from a young lady, a student at Minuteman, that has begun the process of establishing a non-profit company along with another student, that will create, by hand, and distribute, blankets, swaddling cloths and hand knit “octopuses” to babies in the NICU at local hospitals. A tremendous accomplishment. They are following a technique called “Kangaroo Care”, a local project of the students, under the sponsorship of the Cleveland Clinic! President Dan reported that we donated $3100.00 to Hurricane Dorian relief, $500.00 to Susan B Komen Fund, and $500.00 to a Veteran’s Service Dog Project. We also got a photo plaque from the Little League for our support. Superintendent Ed Bouquillon spoke briefly about his joy at being in the new building that he worked so hard to achieve. On time and under burdget. Congrastulations to Superentendent Ed and his team for fighting for all the students that will benefit from such a state of the art facility for many years to come. Future Events: - November 2, Veteran’s breakfast at St. Brigid’s Church 9 AM
- November 7, a service dog will be presented to a veteran
- November 11- Veteran’s Day Program and the Bedford VA
- December 7,8 and 9 Frank S will again lead the annual Sand for Seniors
Cash Raffle tickets were distributed to member. 195 tickets sold do far. More to go! We need everyone to step up an Sell, Sell, Sell! Charlie Vail is now scheduled for quadruple bypass on October 31st at Lahey Clinic in Burlington. PP Don Sherman, reporter

Dear president Dan, Greetings from beautiful Florence Italy. We have moved a few days ago and settling in now. However my wife Elcin, a pharma executive, got her dream job and became the CEO of Menarini Group, a $5 bn Italian pharma company. She has sacrificed for me before and this time it is my turn to follow her to Florence, Italy. There are a few fine business schools around in an hour’s drive or fly time. I’ll get in touch with them in the coming weeks. I also contact the Rotary Club of Florence when I improve my Italian. Could you please share my happy dollars message with the club the next meeting? “My dear Rotarian friends, I donate 240 dollars, 3 dollars for each of the 80 meetings I’ve attended since 2017, for the joy, friendship and community service opportunity. Feel free to call me when you travel here.” I’ve asked PP Dan Busa to bill me for $243 and paid a couple of weeks ago. It was a great honor for me to be a member of Lexington Rotary Club and being nominated for presidency in 2022. PP Spencer B. introduced our guest speaker, Andra Watkins. Andra has written several books, some of which have made the New York Times bestseller list. One of her books, "Not Without My Father", refers to a journey she took on the Natchez Trace Route, the same route in the South taken by Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark explorers, who also went to the Pacific Northwest and helped expand our country westward. Lewis was a scientist, loving animals, biology, and natural studies. Clark was an artist, and had much to do in drawing out their maps for travel. Andra was interested in Meriwether Lewis specifically, and in addition to his suicide, also about the journey he took on the Natchez Trace Route, through three states in the South: Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. This route, by the way, is about 10,000 years old, and today is a parkway, a 444 mile long recreational road and scenic drive. Andra was determined to walk that very same 444 mile long route, just as Meriwether Lewis had done, and she described that most difficult journey she undertook. At times she felt very desperate and wanted to give up; at one time, she was so worn down, she fell asleep in a field of daffodils, and when she awoke, she saw the beauty around her, and was inspired to finish the journey, and she did. She had asked several people to accompany her on that journey, and it was finally her 80 your old father who did. This was to be and ended up being a very difficult journey because of his age, and also because, as his daughter, of what she was aware regarding the type of man that he was and his limitations. She was determined! In the end, they completed the difficult journey together. Andra pointed out that for her if you want to do something, do it! Despite the physically and mentally difficult journey that it was, Andra is glad she did it, especially together with her dad. She very wisely said, “ ‘I wish I could’ turned into ‘I’m glad I did it’ ”. She ended by saying, if you have a wish or a dream, do it, so as to not regret later in life for not doing it. A most inspiring talk by our guest speaker! Respectfully Submitted, PP Murry A.

President Dan Gives Testimony on His History. |
Weather: Warm, a bit humid, slightly cloudy. Lunch: Worth the drive! Roasted chicken, shrimp, sliders, rice, lettuce and fruit salads, and a collection of yummy dessert treats! Plus cold soda or water! Opening Exercises: Allan A. commanded “I pledge…” with crisp authority, while Charlie V. crooned an on-key start to “My country tis of thee.” PP Don S. brought meaning to bowed heads with a terrific Rotary invocation that called us all to serve others. Attendance: Attentive and alert! 15 Lexington Rotarians and NO GUESTS. While there was a moment of indecision, the club voted to continue to “fine for no guest at your table” tradition. Charlie paid Tricia E.’s fine, as she is a new member. Welcome, Tricia! Welcome Song: No guests = no song. Sorry! Delighted Dollars and Funny Fines: PP Michelle paid for a terrific vacation, while Meagan Murphy kicked in for her trip to that grand old sod, Ireland. PP Don M. recalled days of yore in our club’s past: The occasionally over-occupancy Sheraton dining room at lunch (100 plus members), the “pool table” (as in swimming pool), and what was going on in the pool during lunch. PP Bill C. thanked PP Don M. for mentioning these old times and the Lexington Minuteman, where Bill once worked. Announcements: - Rotary Cookout at PP Frank S.’s home on Thursday, July 25, starting at 6:00 pm and going until midnight. Games, BBQ, pool, hot tub, lots of food and drink, and stellar fellowship. 30 plus Rotarians, family members and friends are expected. All are welcome. Frank guarantees the current weather forecast: “Plenty of sunshine, low humidity, clear skies, and temperatures in the 70’s.”
- Lowell Spinners Game on Friday, August 9, starting at 7:05 pm. Organizer President Dan suggests that you get there early because of traffic. $5 to park.
- Rotary District Governor’s Visit on Monday, August 19, at 12:15. “Let’s have a great turnout!”
Today’s Speaker was President Dan Olsen: Before beginning his “background chat,” President Dan shared that Simmons College had thanked the Club for its generous donation that was made to the college during PP Michelle’s tenure. PP Dan was born on Long Island 76 years ago. He met his wife in his junior year of high school and subsequently graduated from Rutgers in biological science. He earned his DDS at the University of Buffalo in 1969 and was asked to join the faculty. Dan taught there for four years, through the anti-Vietnam war unrest, and in 1973 decided to go into private practice. Serendipity struck, when Dan bought the dental practice of a past president of the Lexington Rotary Club, who took Dan to a meeting, where he met Murray A. (Side Note: PP Don S. and PDG Jack M. have been in the club for 50 years.) Dan remarked that the biggest challenge was learning all the members’ names and ended by congratulating the Club its growth during PP Michelle’s year (8 new members!). And he’s looking forward to another great year! Raffle Gifts: Thank you, ARLEX Oil Corp., Patriot Community Bank, Walpole Cooperative Bank, Eagle Bank, the Rotary Club of Lexington, and Trica Elkins/aloft/element Hotels. 50/50 Raffle: PP Michelle. won! $35! PP Spencer Betts Receives Another Paul Harris Fellow |
On a sunny, still cool last Monday in April, our “Rock Star” President Michelle G opened the meeting attended by 24 Lexington Rotarians, 1 visiting Rotarian, and 1 guest. President Michelle did take off her “celebrity specs” to preside, yet there was such commotion, Sgt at Arms Alan A was asked to intervene, and yelled, “Shut up!” PP Spencer B led the Pledge with first verse of America by Megan M. PP Don S gave the invocation (no prayers needed for the Celtics and Bruins; as for the Red Sox, well, still early.) Patti served her usual delicious blend of hot and cold luncheon fare, highlighted by yummy chocolate chip cookies. Our distinguished guest was a new member-to-be, Achantel Thornton, Real Estate. After receiving yet another Paul Harris Fellow from President Michelle, PP Spencer B paid for last week’s bulletin omission; but was happy to include some more $$ for his son’s first lacrosse goal. PP Dan B paid in honor of his twins 35th birthdays this day. He added he is still standing, but we sided with the twins knowing what it’s like to put up with him. PP Dan B then gave gracious kudos to PP Jim F for helping his daughter Haley getting a job at Brookhaven and for the great career boost the Brookhaven experience gave her. Charlie V didn’t let the Welcome Song lag ─ it must be spring fever. PP Spencer B said we still have a few tables left to buy tickets for Comedy Night, which is Friday, May 10, 7 pm, Knights of Columbus, 177 Bedford Street, Lexington, downstairs from Sgt at Arms Alan A’s Karate School/Health Club (no worries, no spa). Sgt at Arms Alan A is handling our table for Discovery Day, May 25, and invites other Rotarians to join him. PP Jim F announced there are 15 Lexington High School and Minuteman Vocational Scholarship winners for our annual Scholarship Luncheon on May 13. PDG Jack M noted the passing of Marian Powell, wife of the late Jack Powell, former proprietors of the Minute Shop on Muzzey Street. PP Dan B mentioned the recent passing and today’s wake of local painting contractor Paul McNamara, friend to so many in Lexington. Raffle Gifts were donated by: PP Dan O, Eagle Bank, Ray Ciccolo, and Arlex Oil. The 50/50 Raffle was fittingly won for the first time by our recent new member Veronica C for $70. There was no speaker today. Must be Pres Michelle wants to give her charges some “quiet time,” or, in some cases, “nap time.” Although now becoming a short-timer, “Rock Star” President Michelle has had quite a splendid year as our peerless leader, offering upbeat enthusiasm, Rotary good will, and inspiring new membership. We will forgive her for having her agent and limo getting her to and from meetings. Happy May Day ─ PP Ed G

Our speaker was Luke Ryan. Luke is a Lexington resident, works for channel 25 in business development and a former Rotary Exchange scholarship recipient, but that is not what he talked about. Luke talked about his son and his son’s rare disease Juvenile Myositis or JM. Around 1 year ago, Luke’s son Liam experienced some weird rashes and a lack of physical energy. Luke went to several specialists before he was able to find our what exactly Liam had. When he got the diagnosis of JM Luke went to work to understand the disease and how he could help. JM affects only about 1 in 500,000 people. You are as likely to get hit by lightning as you are of getting JM. There is not much knowledge or treatments for JM. With his background in media and marketing Luke went to work to try and build public awareness. He got Liam’s story on local media and done a few fund raisers. He also is partnering with Bentley College athletics through Team Impact, to have Liam interact with the college kids. For more information about Liam and JM in general you can check out Luke’s new website www.CureJM4Liam.com. Raffle donations were provided by; I totally missed this… I will pay next week. PP Murry won the 50/50 for $60. SB

Annual Joint Meeting with Concord Club a Great Success. |
The weather was cool, cloudy and 49 degrees. Plenty of Rotarians from Lexington and Concord reunited again at the Concord’s Colonial Inn one more time. We’ve enjoyed Turkey drumsticks, breasts, veggies, salad and a fine apple cobbler. Our Charlie Vail led us in the pledge, June Grace of Concord led “God Bless America” and The Rev. John Lombard of Concord led the prayer. From us PDG Jack, President Michelle, PP Dan Busa and President Henry Dane, Kevin McDougal, June Grace and Sharon from Concord donated happy dollars for their trips and our re-union. There were no fines, a surprise for Lexington Rotarians. We were all proud to see our PP Don Martini to receive an award from Concord for his drone training at the “Boys and Girls Club”. Our speakers were Lorain Marquis, the chairperson and Linda Dixon of Lexington Celebration Committee and Robert Norton of Concord Celebration Committee. They told us the background story of this year’s Patriot Day celebrations. Like a good novel, it was full of surprises and twists. Due to the fast changing weather conditions, The Youth Parade ceremonies was taken indoors just 45 minutes before its scheduled time and the main parade schedule changed to 1:15 PM at the very last moment and 75 marching units had to adjust. Everything went smoothly with a great effort by both committees. In a jovial atmosphere president Henry closed the meeting at 1:20 PM. We look forward to hosting Concord next year. Enjoy the photos. Vocal Revolution Presents to Rotary |
|
Another well done lunch buffet greeted 19 Lexington Rotarians and 3 guests for the first April meeting. Today’s singing had a bit of an uptick in tonal quality as two of our guests with polished a capella skills added their voices and energy. Gene Chang and Lee Daum from the group Vocal Revolution, now headquartered in Lexington, made a presentation about their group. For more than 50 years they have been enjoying what Gene called the Hobby of Music- singing acapella. Currently they have over 65 members ranging in age from 18-80 and are constantly recruiting new talent. Their endeavors include reaching out to local schools with their performances to help raise awareness of music in general and the joy it can bring to participating in a group. Being an all volunteer group poses some challenges for scheduling which subsequently means they need lots of notice to be able to put a group together for a performance. Sometimes as few as 4 members will perform as a quartet. Other times an ensemble of 6-12 members or a complete Chorus of 25-30 will perform. Some of their favorite gigs include Singing Valentines, Special event performances and singing for seniors. Their success is evident by their collection of championships and titles they have won both regionally and nationally over the years. If you have an idea for an event of your own that you want to make special, you can contact Lee or Gene at : business@vocalrevolution.org or their web site at www.vocalrevolution.org . Announcements: - Patriots Day – April 15th (Contact Domenic Sacari for scheduling)
- District Assembly in Wakefield on April 10th. 6-9pm (Club will sponsor your attendance)
- Joint meeting with Concord Rotary in Concord at noon on April 18th.
- Comedy Night- May 10 (PP Dan Busa has tickets and we are still looking for raffle gifts)
- Scholarship Awards Lunch will be on May 18th.
- Discovery Day in Lexington will be on Saturday May 25th.

A Lively Meeting With New and Old Guests |
It was a sunny, but cool day for the March 25th meeting of the Lexington Rotary Club. There were nineteen Lexington Rotarians, one visiting Rotarian, and two guests. The bill of fare included sliced beef with vegetables, cold cuts, salad, and desert. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by PP Jim Freehling, one verse of America led by PP Jim Shaw, and the invocation was said by PDG Jack Maloney. Raffle prizes were donated by Arlex Oil, Eagle Bank and the Lexington Rotary Club. Our guests included PP Paul Thibeault of the Burlington Club, Yanira Motto of Youville Place, and Achantel Thornton of Keller Williams Realty. Both Yanira and Achantel are considering membership in the club. PP Jim Shaw asked for a fine for a table which hoarded all three guests. No fine for the table, but Jim was fined for suggesting the fine. PP John O'Donnell paid a fine for missing a meeting, and PP and treasurer Dan Busa paid happy dollars because his grandson gained five pounds and grew two inches. PP Paul Thibeault (Burlington) paid happy dollars, as did Veronica Caira in honor of Yanira's pending nuptials. PP Spencer Betts announced that the club will benefit $360 as a result of the March Madness pool. He also announced that comedy night planning is going well, and that tables and ads are encouraged. PP Frank Smith said he will be sending out an announcement for help retrieving the Sand for Seniors buckets. PP Domenic Sicari reminded members that assignments for Patriots Day have been sent out. Finally, president Michelle Galbiati announced that the annual joint Concord/Lexington Rotary meeting will be in Concord on April 18th. She encouraged members to bring items for a military pack-out. Rotary Meets and Eats at Minuteman HS |
The meeting on the 18th was held at the Lexington Minuteman Vocational Technical School in the dining room of the culinary arts department. The day was sunny and partly cloudy, still cold though we all want spring to hurry up. A lovely luncheon buffet had been prepared by the students, which featured salmon and a carving station of succulent roast beef, and other treats including cold cuts, salad and veggies. The meeting was called to order at precisely 12:30 by Pres. Michelle. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by PP Don Martini. One verse of America was led by PP Dan Olsen. The invocation was given by PP Don Sherman. There were 18 attending Rotarians and 5 guests. A potential 19th Rotarian had gone to the Lexington Golf Club by mistake. He was sorely missed, and shall remain nameless, but his initials are PP J.O. The 5 guests were Minuteman students from Rotary Interact and their leader, Erin Bordeaux. Raffle gifts were donated by Arlex Oil, Bob Cunningham, the Rotary Club, and Eagle Bank. Various Rotary members won the raffle prizes, but all donated them to the student guests. Happy dollars were given by PP Spencer, whose alma mater, Old Dominion, made it into March Madness, but lost in the first round. Announcements: - PP Don M. announced that if anyone is interested in a Rotaplast trip similar to the one he went on last year, there are openings for two non-medical Rotarians; see him if interested.
- Charlie V. announced that the Lexington Historical Society’s new archive building was having an open house on the 21st from 5-7 P.M..
- Comedy Night will be May 10th. Please: Sell tickets and reserve tables and donate to the silent auction.
- Patriot’s Day plans are on track. The schedule has been posted and emailed. Please let PP Dominic know of any scheduling conflicts or additional interest.
- A joint meeting with the Concord Club will be on April 18th in Concord at the Colonial Inn.
The featured guests of today’s meeting were Minuteman Tech students, Interact Club members with their leader, Erin Bordeau. They will be part of a group of 22 students who will go with Ms. Bordeau on a big charitable work trip to Puerto Rico to help with there construction in St. Bernard’s Parish. The devastation from Hurricane Maria has barely been touched and the recovery is slow. There is still a lot of work to do to bring the island back to full function. They will be helping AmeriCorps volunteers build houses. Funds for the trip are being raised by selling cutting boards made by the wood shop at Minuteman. They’ve raised over $5,000.00 so far. More money today was raised as several Rotarians purchased cutting boards. The culinary arts instructor Anita played auctioneer to auction off a framed, action portrait of Christian Vazquez, Red Sox catcher. A lively bidding war between PP Dan B and Steve K was finally won by Steve K, only for the two to discover they were both bidding in order to donate it to the Comedy Night Silent Auction collection. PP Don M paid $150 for a Hamilton shirt with the Puerto Rican flag on it. It was a great meeting. We always love coming to Minuteman. This was even more satisfying because of the Puerto Rican aid trip. - SCK

Our Speaker Today: Our speaker was our very own Ugur E. Ugur had a slide presentation and talk about his recent trip with his daughter, Aylin, and wife, Elcin, to Antarctica. It is now summer there. They flew to Santiago Chile, got to the southern tip of South America, and took a small ship that can break through ice, but it was not an actual heavy-duty ice breaker, to Antarctica – about 1.5 days each way. They went because Ugur’s daughter wanted to go to Antarctica. Ugur said the winter there is not colder than Boston in the daytime, about 30 – 35° F. the nights are colder, however. Lots of large glaciers, and they viewed them both in daytime and nighttime. On the slides he was showing, Ugur said the black markings on the glaciers are areas that are up to 10,000 years old. He said Antarctica is one of the purest places on earth. Lots of photos taken. Good food! Coffee and Kahlua make up some of the traditional drinks on this trip! Nightlife also consists of tours - lighting and colors are amazing, including sunsets and sunrises. Wildlife is varied and unique, consisting of penguins of all types, different species of seals and birds, and they observed, close up, orcas– killer whales, and humpback whales. The ship also made its way through Drake Passage, known to be the most dangerous place in the oceans, where the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans meet. A terrific talk with beautiful slides! So happy for you and your family, and thank you for your presentation, Ugur. The 50-50 raffle was for $50 and was won by PP Lori M., after which the meeting was adjourned by President Michelle. Respectfully submitted, PP Murry A.

Guest Speaker Dr. Michael Stare was our guest speaker. Michael is the principal owner of Spectrum Fitness Consulting. Starting out in Beverly he has expanded is business to a brand new state of the art facility in Bedford. Speaking about the problem most people encounter while trying to exercise and get into/stay in shape is lack of time and boredom doing the mundane and repetitive exercises. Most people, when working out without a coach, are usually doing the wrong workout, or are doing them with the incorrect form, causing more problems than gains. The Dr. says the best workouts are resistance training with the help of a personal trainer. This is particularly true for people with back and knee problems. Dr. Stare’s website, https://www.spectrumfit.net, can give additional information and links to answer questions you may have. Our 50/50 winner, PSA Charlie, for $60.00. PP Bob O’K

Raffle Donations were from Busa Wine and Spirits, The Rotary Club of Lexington, Eagle Bank, and Arlex Oil. Speaker Our guest speaker was James Malloy our new Town Manager for the Town of Lexington. He served as Westboro’s town manager since 2009. He was previously Sturbridge’s town administrator for 15 years, and he led communities in New York and Colorado for several years before arriving in Massachusetts. In Lexington he oversees a workforce of hundreds of employees, oversees nearly every town department aside from the school system, and works with selectmen to prepare the town’s annual budgets and plan large capital projects. Construction planning is scheduled for 2019. The Fire House on Bedford Street has been demolished. After the fire department is finished, The Lexington Police station will undergo a similar process of temporary relocation while development of a new facility begins. The Lexington board of Selectmen will work on proposed plans to replace the high school and potentially the main town center on Massachusetts Avenue. The proposal for this is expected to come at Town Meeting in March. Any renovations to Lexington’s center would focus primarily on improving safety and accessibility. This would include the installation of new brick along walkways that are more accommodating to wheelchair users, as well as adding and updating crosswalks. Some aesthetic changes to the area would be necessary as well, but the board is focused on maintaining the feel of Lexington’s town center. The 50/50 was won by PDG Jack M. $65.00 which was donated back to the club. Thank you PDG Jack M. President Michelle G. rang the bell and our meeting was ended. Respectfully submitted, PP Domenic S

December 17th 2018 Rotary Club of Lexington Holiday Party |
As the sun broke through the late morning snow clouds at the Lexington Country Club, the dining room came alive with the warm chatter of Rotarians, guests and friends exchanging Holiday greetings. As is typical each year, friendships that are now a year older were renewed with details of grand babies due, recent weddings and travel tails from the world over. A moment of silence was observed at the start of the meeting for the recent passing of PP Bix Shoemaker. Our featured guests today were the Lexington High School Madrigal Singers, who did their best to hold their chuckles as we sang our welcome song in the usual key of X-major. Many thanks and special recognition to Patty and the kitchen crew for the fantastic buffet meal- fit for a king. (OK I’ll say it- or a Queen) PP Dan B found it important to call out and fine the alarm guy and plumber for not responding to his electronic invite to the meeting. (Bah Humbug to the inter-web). Many other fines, mostly self-imposed were offered to celebrate various occasions or events. Each was quickly collected by our energetic Sgt-at-Arms Alan. Many thanks to Pam Awrach, who after winning the 50/50 raffle, graciously donated it back to the Club. With 24 Lexington Rotarians present, it was hard to imagine that not one of the 34 guests and visitors was invited to sit at the Betts, Vail, Grant, Freehling table. Maybe Spencer’s Hawaiian Holiday shirt made it look like the entertainment table. Nice job at the Goodwill Store Spencer! Regardless it cost them five bucks each to sit closest to the door. The true spirit of the season was the delightful singing by the a Capella Madrigal Singers- all 18 of them. They are a lively and talented grouped who seemingly loved to sing with obvious energy and smiles. Their Director, Jason Ianuzzi confirmed how much he enjoyed working with them and seeing them perform. Finally, a note of thanks to Nick and Nancy of Wagon Wheel Nursery for the beautiful table center pieces. And thanks to Santa for his attendance and assistance raising $825.00 that the Club will put to thoughtful charitable use Noteworthy: - No meeting Monday, 12/24 or Monday,12/31.
- Next regular meeting is on Monday,1/7/19.
- No meeting Monday, 1/14/19
- The next day is our annual meeting with Lions Club on TUESDAY 1/15/19 at the KofC on Bedford St., the tail twisting starts at 6:30pm. (Please remember to reply to the invitation, if you haven't already, to accept or decline.)

The December 10th meeting of the Lexington Rotary club was on a perfectly sunny and cold afternoon. A nice lunch was served of coconut shrimp, grilled chicken, Asian noodles, veggies and salad. We had 17 Rotarians in attendance with one guest. Meaghan Murphy led the Pledge of Allegiance, Invocation by PP Don Sherman and the National Anthem from the past weeks Army/Navy game was played by PP Dan Busa. Lots of merriment and happiness filled the room with soon to be new member starting things out. James Ellis was very happy to be be joining Rotary, PDG Jack was happy it's freezing cold outside, PP Don M for a trip to AZ to see his son and PP Spencer B was happy audit season is over. A new application is being processed for Arianna Cardillo. New member Cleave C has accepted the position of Second VP. The club made a donation to Cary Memorial Library for their 150 year gala. No meeting December 24 or 31st. PP John O'Donnell was very obviously heartbroken over that news. He'll miss us dearly. Remember, the joint meeting with the Lion's Club is January 15th at the Knights of Columbus at @ 6:30 PM. Also don't forget to donate to President Michelle's Polar Plunge fund and/or join the fun yourself and sign up to plunge with her! The meeting wrapped up in style with James Ellis being inducted into the club by his sponsor PP Dan B and President Michelle. PP Don M showed a video of a performance of a singing group, No Chaser, doing The 12 Days of Christmas. And Sir John O'Donnell walked away with the 50/50. Bah Humbug! Meaghan M

- Joint Meeting with the Lions Club of Lexington on Tuesday, January 15, 6:30 to 8:30 PM, at the Knights of Columbus Heritage Hall. 177 Bedford St.
Our guest speaker today was Tommy Vee, who is head of Valley Hypnosis in Methuen. Tommy has been doing hypnosis for several years. He is both a clinical and a stage hypnotist. Tommy majored in hotel management in college, but changed to clinical hypnosis with the influence of his dad, a well-known and successful hypnotist himself, and then went on to stage hypnosis in addition to clinical. As an entertainer, he has traveled on many cruises as an entertainer of hypnosis, and has appeared at many USA entertainment sites as well over the years. On stage, Tommy does hypnosis just for fun and entertainment with the audience and volunteer subjects. He talked about several myths of hypnosis, including that you cannot be hypnotized if you do not want to be, and that once hypnotized, you will not do something suggested if you do not want to do it. Although most of Tommy's work is in clinical hypnosis, he said, as an entertainment hypnotist, that is where the real money is! There are two levels of hypnosis, according to Tommy. Level 2 hypnosis is “awake hypnosis.” He had us as subjects, and demonstrated awake hypnosis on us. For many of us, this really worked! Charlie V. popped in and said per past experience, “yup!” Hypnosis is the subject of consciousness versus subconsciousness. It is sometimes the sub conscience which is tapped and allows a person to note certain occurrences in their life of which they may not have been consciously aware. This may provide an answer the patient or examiner is seeking. Another part of Tommy's clinical practice involves smoking cessation and alcohol imbibement cessation. These are just two classes of problems that can be helped via hypnosis, and there are others as well. Tommy stressed that anyone who comes to him for help via hypnosis must want to solve the problem (ex: wanting to quit smoking and/or drinking), and if they do not have that commitment, he will not accept them as patients; i.e., he cannot make them want to solve the problem – they must make that commitment within themselves before going on to hypnosis therapy. Thank you, Tommy, for giving us insight into this very important and interesting topic, including its therapeutic values as well as just having safe fun on the entertainment side. Today's 50/50 raffle winner, of 45 buckaroos! was PP Spencer B. – who else!!?? Good going, Spencer! Respectfully submitted, PP Murry A

New Member Veronica Caira Inducted. |
On a cold and wet day, 18.5 Rotarians (an explanation on the half Rotarian half guest in a little while), 1.5 guests and a visiting Rotarian/speaker meet at the Lexington Golf Club with President Michelle presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by PP Domenic, one verse of America was led by PP Dan O, PDG Jack did the invocation. The food was a mixture of a steak, fish, and veggies. Fines started quickly as PDG Jack took a little liberty in the invocation and blessed the cold windy weather. PP/Secretary Frank fined himself for not properly introducing the speaker as also a visiting PP Rotarian from Winchester. Once the visitors were introduced and MVP Charlie led us in the welcome song, the happy dollars came rolling in. - PP Domenic for his belated birthday and a vacation
- PDG Jack for the Lexington High school boys football victory
- PP Jim S for our new member Veronica (more to come)
- PP Nick for our guest that is now full-time director of the Lexington Chamber
- PP Murray for a wonderful vacation to Japan
- PP Spencer for a better vacation to Jamaica
- PP Laurie for a few missed meetings and the 130 meals provided during Thanksgiving
- P Michelle was grateful for everyone’s help and the overwhelming success of the Cash Raffle, Raise Against Hunger event and the Thanksgiving meal donations. She also has been very lucky in her lottery winnings lately and let the club know that she donated her $70 50/50 winning from last week to the club.
Now on to our half guest half member, Veronica Caira was inducted as our newest member. She is the branch manager at Enterprise Bank and currently the Secretary, I mean, TREASURE of the Lexington Chamber. She lives in Lexington. Please make sure to welcome her to our club. PP Jim F will be collecting Toys for Tots donations at next Monday’s meeting or you can drop them off at Brookhaven until the 6th. Sand For Seniors is this weekend (December 1st & 2nd). If you can help, please make sure you get in touch with PP/Secretary Frank S. December 17th is our holiday party. There will be no meeting on December 24th or 31st. Our speaker was Richard Salter of Salter health care. He is the president of the company and a PP of the Winchester Rotary club. The focus of his talk was on health care patient advocacy. With the changing rules within the health care insurance space there is a big focus on not re-admitting patients. So, if you are being dismissed form a hospital where do you go next? Home, Nursing Home or skilled facility. You need to make sure you advocate for the location that will bring the most successful outcome. Their facilities focus on short-term rehabilitation stays. For more information you can check out www.SalterHealthcare.com - 10 DAY NOTICE - JAMES ELLIS
Raffle donation were provided by; Eagle Bank, Arlex Oil, Enterprise Bank and Wagon Wheel. PP/Secretary Frank S won the 50/50 for $60. PP SB

Annual Lexington/Burlington Thanksgiving Football Meeting. |
It was a cold, rainy and a miserable day outside but we had a full house, full of bravery, friendship and a bit of rivalry inside. In our Joint Meeting with the Burlington Rotary Club, we, 15 Lexington Rotarians and two soon to be Rotarians joined with 40 Burlington Rotarians, Burlington and Lexington High School administrators, athletic directors, coaches and team captains and a visiting Rotarian from North Carolina. We’ve enjoyed our Turkey ahead of the Thanksgiving Day celebration. PP Jim F led us in the pledge, we sang one verse of America led by PP Domenic and the invocation was given by PDG and PP Jack. PP John gave 50 happy dollars to celebrate the success of the cash raffle. Among the many Rotarians who sold raffle tickets, PP Dan topped the list by 77 tickets, followed by PP John 40 and president Michelle 32. Raffle gifts were donated by: - Eagle Bank
- People’s United Bank
- Walpole Bank
- Arlex Oil
And many raffle gifts were won by our guests. PP Frank said that the sand for seniors activity, where we deliver 50 pound sand boxes to our elderly, will take place between November 30, December 2. If you wish to deliver sand boxes please contact PP Frank. This wasn’t mentioned at the meeting but I mention it here anyway. On Sunday we, along with the Concord Rotary, packed 10,136 meals made of soy, rice, dried vegetables and vitamins in a Rise Against Hunger activity at Minuteman High School for those in need. Four Lexington Rotarians were joined by Lexington and Concord Rotaract members and community members. .jpg) .JPG) Lexington and Burlington High School football teams have been facing each other every Thanksgiving day over the past fifty years. We helped them to warm up for this Thursday’s match. As a part of the friendly rivalry, Lexington and Burlington Schools superintendents, Dr Julie Hackett and Eric Conti, introduced their High School principals, Andrew Stephens and Mark Sullivan who introduced their athletic directors Naomi Martin and Shaun Hart, who introduced their cheerleader and football coaches, Laura, George, Adrian and Dan MacKay. They finally introduced their team captains. If you have the opportunity try to show up at 10:15am in Lexington and support our young players. Our guest speaker was Steve Bullpet, longtime sports writer for the Boston Herald, who covers the Celtics and the NBA in general. He addressed our young athletes and emphasized importance of being team mates and how sportsmanship define our lives well beyond the game. 50/50 worth $70 was won by President Michelle, who is a natural born winner. PP John O Demands Short Meeting, Pres. Michelle Obliges. |
President Michelle opened the meeting of November 5th on a cold overcast and rainy day. Winter will arrive soon! We had 16 Rotarians and three guests- two at my table. I should have proposed a fine on tables without guests. James, originally from England, and a former Rotarian, has been in the USA for 20 years, but kept his British accent! A bit later, Rotary applicant, Veronica Caira, from Enterprise Bank, arrived. No fine for being late until she is a member! This is her 10 day notice pre- membership visit to the club. Veronica is originally from Italy. Looks like her membership makes us more of an International club. Don Martini remarked that while he enjoyed his participation with the USA-Philippians cleft palate team, he never wants to see an autoclave sterilizer again! Dan O still offered him a job in his dental; office as a sterilizer operator, but Dan showed no enthusiasm for such a prized position. Dan Busa went with his family on a trip to France & Ireland to explore family history- An uncle buried in the USA cemetery at Normandy, and to Ireland for family members on his mother’s side. He said it was quite memorable, for all members of his family. Secretary Frank carefully set up who introduced both guests at my table, but in a conspiracy Dan O & I managed to get Frank fined for not properly indicating who introduces who. Dan introduced both Veronica Caira and, eventually, my wife Barbara. The Cash Raffle drawing will be on Friday November 16th at the Lexington Golf Club at 6:30 PM. We could use more raffle items. Please turn in your ticket sales money ASAP to PP John O or Treasurer Dan B or the tickets are not valid for a prize! Monday November 12, no meeting. Rise Against Hunger Pack-Out Sunday, November 18, Minuteman High School 12:00 Noon to 3:00 PM. Monday November 19th, 12:00 PM, at the Golf Club is our annual joint meeting with Burlington. PP Don S

Rotary Hosts Young Men and Women from Friends Forever. |
As the weather was desperately trying to clear, 17 Rotarians and 25 guests came together for a meeting with the Minuteman Interact Club and the Friends Forever group. Another delicious lunch of turkey burgers, beef, veggies, cold cuts, soup, salad, fruit and dessert was enjoyed by all. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Past President Dominic S, the first verse of America by Past President Lori M and the invocation given by Past President Don S. Past President Jim S introduced Veronica Tamurrini-Caira from Enterprise Bank. Veronica is also the treasurer for the Lexington Chamber of Commerce and has submitted an application for membership to the Club. Phil, Kylie and Rebecca were introduced with the Friends Forever group and Connie M attended as Interact Coordinator. Connie again thanked the Club for the help we have given and updated us on the activates of their Club. Interact intends to attend the Pack Out and participate in the Polar Plunge. Charlie V led us in the Welcome Song which was much better than the first verse of America. Past President Don M gave an explanation of fines and happy dollars, making a donation himself. - Past President Spencer had some happy dollars for a supposed work event where they drank way too much beer. Sergeant at Arms Allan gave 10 happy dollars for the Red Sox World Series win.
- President Michelle also had 10 happy dollars.
- Past President Jim S paid a 10 dollar fine for mentioning the Colonial Times.
- Past President Dan O gave 10 happy dollars for good singing of the welcome song, fining each member one dollar for the horrible first verse of America.
Announcements 11/3 Veterans Breakfast 8-11am Keilty Hall Saint Brigids Church- 11/12 Veterans service and lunch at the Bedford VA 10am service, followed by lunch. A joint effort with the Concord Club.
- 11/12 No meeting Veterans Day Celebrated
- 11/16 Cash Raffle 6:30pm Lexington Golf Club Raffle donations needed
- 11/18 Rise Against Hunger Pack Out 11am-4pm Lexington Minuteman High School
- 11/19 Lexington Burlington Thanksgiving Joint Meeting 12:15pm Lexington Golf Club
The raffle gifts today were donated by Arlex Oil, Past President Bill C, Rotary Club of Lexington, Walpole Cooperative Bank and Busa Wine and Spirits. Raffle gifts needed. Today we were joined by the Friends Forever Group and the Rotary Club of Lexington Interact Club from Minuteman High School. Earlier in the day the Friends Forever came to Minuteman High School to have breakfast, making their own omelets in the restaurant with the culinary arts department. Breakfast was followed by a tour of the various shops in the school. Then off to Sunrise Nursing Home in Weston to visit and entertain residents there. The Irish teens commit to a yearlong program including six months preparation at home. There are 5 students from Holy Family Youth Club (Catholics) led by Kylie and five from Mount Collyer Youth Club (Protestants) led by Phil. They agree to no technology or television for the entire trip. The group stays in New Castle, New Hampshire and enjoys many community service projects, including working with kids with disabilities, the Red Cross and Food Pantries. A favorite part of the program is helping others, working side by side with their new friends. Learning that teens everywhere are the same was a bit of a surprise to many of the Friends Forever participants. Phil spoke to the situation in Northern Ireland and Belfast noting the absence of government. He spoke of the wall built in the park. The only one of its kind in all of Europe. It was built on the day of the ceasefire of the IRA as a Peace Wall. The area is very dangerous with police presence and cameras. Next, Ronan told us of his preparation for this trip, and his appreciation of working together in the group. He dreaded giving this talk but is interested in public speaking and leadership. He noted his inspiration comes from his Granny, Mahatma Gandhi and Donald Trump. Ronan spoke of the violence, mentioning a bombing, where eleven were forced to leave their home. Then, Michael spoke about his experience with the group and at home. He said he was encouraged to join Friends Forever by his family. He has worried endlessly about having to give this speech but hopes it will help with speeches in the future. He is learning a lot in the program including Ronan’s inspiration! Both young men addressed the focus, dedication and hard work needed to move forward. Since the beginning of the Friends Forever program the violence has decreased. The group hopes to continue working together in community service at home. All participants are looking forward to shopping! The 50/50 raffle was $60.00. Bob C had the winning ticket and gave it to Michael, one of the speakers from Friends Forever. PP Lori M

Visitor's Day Attracts Potential New Members. |
It was a brisk autumn day, weather-wise, when 16 Lexington Rotarians, one visiting Rotarian (Bob Porter, a cousin-in-law of Steve Cole, from Sacramento, California) and 11 invited guests to our annual Visitor’s Day open house met for our weekly meeting. The buffet table consisted of delicious barbeque spareribs, chicken wings, baked mac & cheese, veggies, salad and an assortment of cold cuts as well as cookies. The meeting was called to order by Pres. Michelle and after the Pledge, one verse of America, and the Invocation, fines and happy dollars were in order. Among many contributions, Ugur E. paid happy dollars for his new position at a local University, PP Nick C. paid for his upcoming trip with Nancy to Florida as snow birds. PP Don M. then gave us a report of his trip to Cebu City in the Philippines with Rotaplast to assist volunteer doctors from the U.S. who were there to operate on children who were suffering with cleft palates and cleft lips. On the first day of the mission approximately 200 potential patients arrived to be screened for a procedure to correct their deformities. Some of these children had traveled for two to three days to get to the hospital. Of the 200 who were screened, 105 were accepted for the procedure. Over the next seven days 44 cleft palates and 47 cleft lips were corrected by these volunteer surgeons. Although Rotaplast began as a project of the Rotary Club of San Francisco, it became a separate non-profit corporation in 1996. Kudos to PP Don for volunteering to get involved in this International Service Project. Our guest speaker for today was Dick Berardino, a former member of the Lexington Golf Club. Dick is a player development consultant for the Boston Red Sox. A former outfielder and longtime manager in minor league baseball, he also spent three years (1989–91) as a coach with the Red Sox. As a player, Berardino batted and threw right-handed, stood 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighed 190 pounds). Dick compiled a record of 753 wins and 858 losses (.467) with two championships in 21 seasons (1966–67; 1971–85; 1987–88; 1997–98) as a minor league manager. Nineteen of those 21 seasons were spent in short-season leagues. In 1968, Dick joined the Red Sox organization as a minor league coach, and 2017 marked his 50th consecutive year with Boston. From 1971 through 1985, he spent 15 consecutive seasons as the manager of the Red Sox' Short Season Class A New York–Penn League farm clubs, the Williamsport Red Sox and the Elmira Pioneers (also known as the Red Sox and Suns during his 13-year tenure there). Dick returned to the NY-PL a dozen years later, in 1997–98, as manager of the Lowell Spinners. In addition to his minor league managerial and coaching assignments, and his three years as bullpen and third-base coach on the Major League staff of Joe Morgan in Boston, he also has served the Red Sox as spring training coordinator, assistant field coordinator of minor league instruction, and roving outfield and base-running coach. Dick shared some of his experiences while with the Red Sox. The 50/50 was $60.00, won by our guest speaker, Dick Berardino. PP Bob S. Go SOX, three down - one to go!!!!

Speaker: Cleve Coats on Active Shooter Training Fellow Rotarian Cleve Coats spoke to us about Active Shooter Training. Cleve has an impressive resume with the Massachusetts State police with over 32 years’ experience in the field. Cleve showed us a quick presentation video and then highlighted the key points in a discussion after. He explained the three important decisions that you must make if you are ever faced with an active shooter. You must decide to either “Run, Hide, Or Fight”. Cleve explained that run should always be the first option if possible. You must always have an escape plan where ever you go. If you are out to eat at a restaurant or out shopping, make note of the emergency escape routes in case an emergency may occur. You should try to help others get out of harm’s way and prevent others from entering danger. If run is not an option, your next plan is to hide in the safest spot possible. Always try to lock doors and/or barricade them to disrupt the shooter from entering inside the room. You should find a spot that is out of view from the shooter and keep as quiet as possible. Always silence phones and prepare yourself to fight if needed. The last option is to fight back. Use any weapon possible to defend yourself. You should always try to disrupt the shooter by throwing objects and try to disarm the shooter during close encounters. If you are with other people, try to come up with a plan to disarm the shooter and take him to the ground until authorities show up. 50-50 Raffle: Bob C won $60 in the 50-50 raffle

- District’s approach was to gather information about the epidemic to understand and decide actions.
- Opioid abuse is a family issue.
- Many babies delivered are exposed to substances.
- 18 % of OD’s are women
- There is a clear link between addiction and genetics.
- Children of OD parents are at greater risk, likely to be users due to genetics and normalization of substance abuse.

- OD’s mostly occur at home when someone else was also home.
- OD’s are more likely when;
- there is an important life change, loosing kids custody, loosing job, loosing someone close.

- The following programs have been developed:
- Psychologic and logistic support for the kids of OD victims.
- What worked: Collection and spreading of successful recovery stories.

Quiet Meeting so Here's a Video. |
Fourteen Lexington Rotarians gathered on a sunny and warm August afternoon to share a delicious lunch including BBQ brisket, chicken fingers, salad and a selection of cold cuts. There were no guests or visiting Rotarians. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by PP Jim Shaw, one verse of America was led by PP Dan Olsen, and the invocation was said by PP Don Sherman. Raffle gifts were supplied by Patriot Community Bank, Arlex Oil, Eagle Bank, PP Bill Cassell, and Busa Wine & Spirits. The scribe failed to notice which Rotarians hauled in the loot. Happy dollars were paid by PP Don Martini for his weekend trip to Washington, DC, PP Jim Shaw for a quiet and pleasant weekend (missing his wife who was in Maine). PP Jim Freehling for spectacular coverage by the Colonial Times about a Brookhaven resident who received the Peace Award, and $4 was paid by PP and treasurer Dan Busa for some story about a guy with a cane and something to do with rubber tips (you definitely had to be there). President Michelle Galbiati announced that she had received a thank you letter from the Douglas House for the club's recent donation. She also reminded members that PP Frank Smith's BBQ will be held this Thursday, August 30th. PP Frank announced the BBQ will now begin at 5:30 since it is now getting darker earlier. It will go on until the last Rotarian drops, or the police break it up―whichever comes first. President Michelle had mentioned that PP Jim Shaw had bumped into District Governor Bob Wood at a Chamber of Commerce event, and that DG Wood had praised our club's effort to support the Rotoplast mission in September. President Michelle announced that so far the club has raised $6,350 for the Rotoplast mission. PP Jim Shaw announced that all is going well for the club's senior BBQ project in September. He also announced that plans are moving forward for the Oktoberfest event taking place on October 13th. Finally, president Michelle reminded members to continue their quest for interesting speakers, and members should forward their suggestion to Jim Tarpey. The 50/50 raffle was won by PSA Charlie Vail. Wash it down with cold soda or water! Enjoy the rest of the meeting with a nice cup of hot coffee! Opening Exercises: PP Lori led off with “I pledge…”, while PP Jim F. crooned a heart-felt “My” to “My country tis of thee.” PP Don S. once again read a thoughtfully selected Rotary invocation that called us all to serve others. Attendance: Attentive and alert! 17 Lexington Rotarians, 1 visiting Rotarian (from the distant state of Washington), and zero honored guests. Charlie V. made his rounds and collected at the tables who had not snared a guest. Welcome Song: No one but Charlie V. could lead us in this welcome refrain. Dutiful Dollars and Foolish Fines: Must have been a good week on Wall Street. Lots of Happy Dollars. After minor harassment of the writer of these notes, PP Dan B. fined PP Don S. for wearing a hat indoors. “Don, the Rapper!” PP John O. dropped some happy dollars for his first vacation in 5 years (a trip to the old sod…Ireland). As an aside, he noted distress at being rebuffed at our full table, only to discover that PP Bob S. had been given a fifth seat there later. (RHIP, John.) In a kind gesture of the type for which he is known, PP Bob S. donated more happy dollars. (New paragraph…too many happy folks) PP Dan B. was happy that his daughter-in-law, Marybeth, received her nursing pin and is having a child. Doing his impression of a post-fight Rocky, PP Nick C. suggested that anyone else asking about his nose be fined $1, thanks Meaghan. (I heard that the other four guys look a lot worse.) PP Frank S. announced that he practiced for the End of the Summer Social by hosting 150 people recently. (That’s a serious dry run!) PP Spencer B. chipped in for his son’s good time at baseball camp. And PP Bill C. dropped a few bucks to promote PP Frank S.’s fantastic advice on treating recurrent canine “green-apple-quick-step.” (being a family publication, I won’t use the “d” word here.) Announcements: Pres. Michelle read a thank you note from one of our scholarship recipients and noted that Committee Reports are due at this time. She also reminded members of a number of upcoming events: August 30 – Rotary Social (6:00 – 8:00 PM) at PP Frank S.’s place, 4 Clematis Road September 10 – District Governor’s Club visit September 25, 26 and 27 – Senior Centers’ BBQ’s October 13 – October-Fest at Depot Square October 22 – Club Visitors Day (It was thought that having a speaker would be important at this meeting, so as to give visitors an idea of a typical Rotary meeting.) PP Dan B. gave an update on the Rotaplast collection-to-date: Over $6,000 plus the Club’s contribution of two surgeries. (An operation cost $600, but any amount is fine.)
IMPORTANT AND URGENT: If you would like to contribute to Rotaplast but haven’t yet, email PP Dan B. ASAP @ lexrotary@gmail.com. He needs to get our total contribution together very soon, and he will bill you, based on your emailed commitment. PP Murry A. mentioned the passing of Dr. Daniel Palant, a pediatrician who was very active in community affairs, with a focus on kids’ welfare. Our visiting Rotarian, Amy Schmidt, spoke briefly about her club in Poulsbo, Washington, a small community of some 10,000 people that has an active Rotary Club with 150 members. (Learning that she is their membership chair, she was promptly asked to join our club.) See Poulsbo in the fall. (photo attached, I hope) Raffle Gifts: Thank you, ARLEX Oil, Patriot Community Bank, Eagle Bank, and Brookhaven. 50/50 Raffle: Charlie V. won! $40! DING! Pop Quiz: Name the character who says, “Tha…tha…that’s all, folks!” O Bugs Bunny O Daffy Duck O Porky Pig O Yosemite Sam Humbly Submitted by BC (who spent Saturday mornings watching Looney Tunes) (And thanks to my hardworking copywriter, PP Dan B.)

Installation Luncheon Number 90 Goes Off Without a Hitch! |
Our annual Installation of Officers meeting was held at the scenic Lexington Golf Club and hosted 21 Rotarians and 12 guests. Patty absolutely outdid herself setting the bar even higher for a fantastic meal that left no one unsatisfied. A special welcome was extended to Ms. Yoon-Hi Kim who visited us from the Lexington Christian Academy where she is the CFO. Our 10-Day notice membership applicant Cleve Coats was also in attendance. President Lori continued her efforts of raising fines and happy dollars to the very last minute. It was likely another armored car trip to the bank for treasurer Dan B today. Happy dollars came from PP Don S for a birthday, PP Murry for 77th birthday and 44th wedding anniversary, PP Domenic for his daughter getting engaged, PP Jim for his scholarship guest, Ken W for a new puppy, 18th anniversary and a trip to Denmark, PP Dan O for turning 75ish (76), Megan M- just because she’s happy, PP Nick C for his 33rd anniversary, PDG Jack M for 51 year anniversary, Jim S for 30th anniversary and finally PP Dan B congratulating President Lori’s great year. Sheila Moore CEO of Hildebrand Speaks to Rotary |
On a beautiful sunny day, 14 Lexington Rotarians, 1 visiting Rotarian, and 2 guests were treated to a delicious lunch consisting of sword fish, pulled pork, vegetables, cold cuts and Cesar salad. Fresh hot chocolate chip cookies were also served. The Pledge-of-Allegiance was led by PP Don Martini, one verse of America was led by PP Domenic Sicari, the invocation was presented by PDG Jack Maloney, and the welcome song was led by PSA Charlie Vail. Raffle gifts were provided by Busa Wine & Spirits, Arlex Oil Corp, PP Bill Cassell, Patriot Community Bank, and Walpole Cooperative Bank. Our guests included Concord Rotarian PP Sharon Spaulding, Lexington Rotary candidate Cleve Coats, and our guest speaker Sheila Moore, CEO of Hildebrand - Family Self Help. Out of the gate, PP Jim Shaw called for fines on PP. Don Martini's table for "hoarding the all three guests." Shaw's motion was accepted and enforced by president Lori. PP Martini responded by stifling Shaw with $20 happy dollars if Shaw refrains from speaking out during the meeting. Knowing how much the club needs the resources, Shaw kindly cooperated. PP Dan Busa paid a fine for distributing a fundraising event notice for State Rep candidate Michelle Ciccolo. PP Bob Sacco paid happy dollars in honor of his granddaughter's graduation from Boston College. PP Jim Freehling paid "miserably wet" dollars for participating in the rain drenched annual Chamber of Commerce golf outing. Our Guest Sharon Spaulding gave happy dollars for Cleve Coats' application. 10 DAY NOTICE: President Lori announced that, Lexington resident, Cleve Coats, a former Lexington police officer and retired State Police sergeant has submitted an application for membership to the Rotary Club of Lexington. Please consider this an official notice. If you have any question of concerns, please contact president Lori. Lori also announced that somehow, Bob Cunningham was not acknowledged for a previous donation made to the weekly raffle. Consider this an acknowledgement, and thank you! Not sure if she actually paid a fine, but president-elect Michelle Galbiati arrived more than fashionably late. Just sayin'. Our guest speaker, Sheila Moore spoke about the programs at Hildebrand, a self help organization whose mission is to help families who are displaced and in need of transitional assistance. She explained that 80% of people in shelters got there by fleeing domestic violence, they were about to be evicted, or are need of emergency shelter. She also pointed out that low salaries and the rising cost of housing in Greater Boston can lead to homelessness. Residents at Hildebrand facilities stay on average for a period of fifteen months. Hildebrand provides 24/7 staff support for residents, and many move to permanent housing within Hildebrand. Hildebrand currently employs about 70 people, up from about 30 when Sheila first joined the organization about five years ago. Sheila went on to explain that half of the adults residing at Hildebrand have high school diplomas, and up to 25% have 2 or 4 year degrees. She concluded her remarks by talking about summer camp programs that are offered to children residing at Hildebrand, and emphasizing that they offer parenting classes to the adults. The 50/50 raffle was $50 and was taken home by president Lori. Respectfully submitted, Jim Shaw

Rotarians Demand More Rotarians at Social Night Meetings Lexington Rotary Game Night: Where is everyone? Lexington Rotarians. Not as social as I thought????? Great food and fellowship @ Lexington Rotary Game Night. Few Rotarians = Fewer games @ Lexington Rotary Game Night. Get the idea? At 6 PM on Monday night, 8 Rotarians and the delightful Toni Cunningham met at the Lexington Golf Club prepared for fun and games. We enjoyed the delightful buffet of appetizers prepared by Patty and all of us enjoyed a lively conversation until 7:30. While prepared for games, we lacked the critical mass to get that part of the evening off the ground. A lot of the discussion revolved around how to increase attendance at these social meetings. If games don’t grab you, what would entice you, friends and family to attend? We’d love to cultivate the social aspects of being a Rotarian and a member of this club. Please let the board know what you think of evening social meetings and what we can do to enhance these events and increase attendance. Respectfully PP Frank S

Lively Meeting on a Beautiful Day |
On a sunny and beautiful spring day, twenty Lexington Rotarians and one guest (visiting Rotarian Chief Paul Thibault of Burlington) enjoyed a delicious lunch consisting of eggplant parmesan, cold cut platter, green beans, salad, wedding soup and dessert. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by PP John O'Donnell, one verse of America was led by PP Frank Smith, the invocation was led by PP Don Sherman, and the Welcome Song was supposed to be led by PSA Charlie Vail. However, president Lori skipped the Welcome Song and moved directly to announcements. PP Jim S. (that would be me) pointed out this atrocity and was promptly rewarded with a request to sing it alone. I did (and the crowd roared!). Hey, this is a guy who wore a ratty old wig in front of 300 people. You think singing a song all alone is punishment? I think not. Happy dollars and fines were paid by PP Don Sherman, PP Dan Busa and PP Frank Smith for the extraordinary singing of the Welcome Song, PP Domenic Sicari for a trip to Aruba and a great social night event, PP Frank for four special outings with friends and family, and Bob Cunningham for a trip to New Mexico to visit an ailing friend. PP Jim Freehling called for a fine from PP Jim Shaw for misspelling the word Comody in a Chamber promotion of Comody Night. President Lori updated the club on a candidate that the club has sponsored for RYLA, and a donation to the Lexington Historical Society. She also promoted a raffle by the Bedford Rotary Club, and announced the two upcoming sports nights at Minuteman and Lexington High School. She announced that our next meeting will be the annual Scholarship Luncheon saying that fifteen recipients will be on hand to receive scholarships. She also announced that the club will be co-hosting a reception with Concord Rotary at the Bedford VA in honor of Memorial Day, and that the annual installation of new officers will be held on June 18th. Please respond to the invitations that have been sent out. President Lori also announced that due to golf outings at the Lexington Club, meetings on June 4th and July 2nd will be held at a location to be determined. Raffle prizes were donated by Busa Wine & Spirits, Colonial Times, Burlington Rotary, Walpole Cooperative Bank and Bob Cunningham. The 50/50 raffle was won by PP Jim Freehling, who took home $60,000 ($60). Someone alert the IRS. Respectfully submitted, PP Jim S

Rotary Game Night Turns Social |
On a cool sunny spring late afternoon 7 Rotarians and 1 guest met at our second evening social. Great food was served as well as cocktails. Games were available to play but the social took a turn to conversation rather than playing games. It was a fun night with fellow Rotarians and their guests. We encourage more members to participate in the future if we continue this format. Respectfully submitted, PP Domenic S

Our speaker was Barclay Henderson. He is a retired owner of several fast food franchises. He spoke to us about the importance of writing our stories about our life experiences so that future generations will know what preceded theirs. He has written two books and read a story from one of them about having a bat in the house and his efforts to get it to leave. We didn’t hear how it turned out, apparently it was more interested in finding mosquitoes than in being a vampire! The 50-50 was for $65 and was won by a Concord Rotarian. Happy Patriots Day! DRO

Get the idea? At 6 PM on Monday night, a large contingent of Rotarians, spouses, children and one very lucky guest arrived at the Lexington golf club to enjoy an evening of games, drinks, food and fellowship. We filled 5 tables with people engaged in lively conversation and enjoying the delightful buffet of appetizers prepared by Patty. Around 7 PM, people gathered for games of Right, Left, Center. Two tables were set up, one a high stakes table and another with no stakes. I left the high stakes table $15 lighter, but quite happy with the evening. Our guest left the table $100 heavier and very happy as well. We expect to see her back at the next game night. When I headed out around 7:30, about half the group was still hanging out, enjoying the evening. The event was a huge success, and I for one am looking forward to the next Game Night. Quiet Day Awaiting the Blizzard. |
This pre-storm meeting started with a hearty fare of clam chowder (it was really potato soup but, who's counting) and Italian sausages plus all the other healthy choices Patty puts together each week. A low-key meeting with 15 Rotarians and 1 guest began on time with the typical confusing fines. Worst singing ever and much talk about why and who was the cause. Try again next week. (Maybe we need to change the song?) Bob C offered some happy dollars for a new car, a convertible (Porsche Boxter). He just loves his hair blowing in the wind on "The Island"! Bob also won the 50/50 which was $800 nickels. No speaker but plenty of announcements- - Next week’s (3/19/18) meeting is at Minuteman Vo-Tech on Marrett Road.
- Polar plunge donations need to be in by 4-1-18 for proper accounting & credit to plungers.
- Sign up on line, CBS Sports, for Basketball bracket game- $20 per bracket fund raiser, half goes to the club.
- Lexington Historical Society is hosting a program on “Taverns” on 3-28-18 $25.00pp or free for Rotary.
- RI is promoting a plant-a-tree day. (Saplings- stick a pencil in the ground & stick the tree in. Add water & come back in 15years to see what happened.)
- President Lori announced that the last meeting of each month will be an evening meeting for a while. Our 3-26-18 meeting will be the first one. Same place and Patty will be sure no one goes hungry or thirsty. This is more of a social event open to friends & associates.

Quick Business Meeting Today |
On a cloudy Monday when the weather was neither lion nor lamb, the Lexington Rotary met for its weekly luncheon at the Lexington Golf Club. In attendance were 18 Lexingtonian members and 1 guest (although the guest, Paul Thibault from the Burlington Rotary, comes so often to make up his missed meetings that he’s practically a Lexington member). The lunch fare was pork tenderloins, burger sliders, rice, corn and coleslaw with the usual salad… fruit and cookies for dessert. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by VP Megan, the first verse of “America” led by Charlie V., and the invocation by P.P. Nick. We honored the presence of Paul Thibault with the Welcome Song led by Charlie. Raffle gifts were donated by Lexington Rotary, Walpole Cooperative, and Busa Wine and Spirits. Winners were VP Megan, Ugur, Paul Thibault, and Dan Olsen. Happy Dollars were given by Pres. Lori for last week’s meeting when lots of guests and prospective members were in attendance. Spencer Betts gave because for the 28th year in a row he’d gone on a ski trip with his high school buddies (you do the math). P. Paul gave because Dan Ray (Boston sports celebrity) will be the guest speaker at Burlington Rotary regular meeting. Paul was also promoting his club’s fundraiser, Friday Night at the Fights, which will be Friday, April 6th. PP Nick donated his last $3 because that’s what he had left. Fines were assessed. Dan Olsen fined our guest for coming to Lexington more often than he goes to his home Rotary. PP John was fined for not addressing the Chair (nothing unusual). Announcements: Comedy Night will be Friday, May 11th at the Knights of Columbus. $600/table. Please contribute donations for the Silent Auction. March Madness: NCAA brackets are available for sign up. $20/person. PP Dan reminded us all that website sponsorships are still available. PP Dominic announced that last week’s Visitor’s Meeting brought us 5 prospective members, including one corporate membership. Future Meetings: Monday 3/12/18 will be at the Gold Club Monday 3/19/18 will be at Minutemen High School Patriots’ Day is April 16th this year. There was no speaker this week. Shortest meeting ever, adjourned at 12:50p.m.

Patric Barbieri Executive Director of the LABBB Colaborative and Associates Speak to Rotary. |
|
It was a 41 degree, grey day outside but a warm and colorful day inside Lexington Golf Club. We were 20 Lexington Rotarians in good spirits and four guests with a wonderful story. We enjoyed delicious (Jewish Deli quality) pastrami, chicken breasts, Patty's homemade chips, roasted baby potatoes, salad and berries and chocolate covered pretzels for desert. PP Domenic led us in the pledge, we sang one verse of America led by Charlie V and the invocation was given by PDG and PP Jack. Happy dollars were flying in the air, most remarkable were from PP Spencer, for Olympic aspirations of his daughter and PP Dan B for his son and daughter-in-law buying a house and moving out. Other givers were Murray, Charlie V, Dan O and Ugur. There were also other givers who did not have a guest at their table. Raffle gifts were donated by: - Lexington Rotary Club
- Patriot Community Bank
- Walpole Cooperative Bank
- John O`Donnell
And won by myself, a nice pear shaped candle, PP Murray and by our guests. President Lori reminded us next week there is no meeting due to President`s Day and our next meeting will be on February 26, which is Rotary Visitors Day and she encouraged us to invite as many guests as possible. Our guests were left to right below: - Patric Barbieri, Executive Director LABBB
- Omar Masood, President and CEO Omar`s World of Comics and Hobbies, a new business in Lexington.
- Sally Hoops, General Manager Omar`s World of Comics and Hobbies
- Kristin Dailey, Events Manager for LABBB
.jpg) Our Speaker Patric Barbieri spoke about the history of the LABBB Collaborative. A nonprofit organization of Lexington, Arlington, Bedford, Burlington and Belmont helping students with special needs to reach their full potential. LABBB was started by three Lexington, and Arlington parents 45 years ago to prepare children with special needs to the adult work world. Today LABBB is providing educational and support services to over 350 students from 60 districts. LABBB programs are all located in public school buildings and any given time LABBB students have activities around 55 places, usually internships at companies. LABBB students graduate by the age of 22 and Rotarians are encouraged to invite interns. LABBB has a budget of $25 million, fully provided by student tuitions. Patric introduced us to Omar, a LABBB graduate who has a passion for comic books. He and his dad decided to turn his hobby into a business and opened Omar`s World of Comics and Hobbies at 30 Waltham Street, former location of B-tone Fitness, on Jan 15. Omar`s team consists of Sally, Christian and many special interns. They are selling comic books, games, hobby items and they are hosting events. As a Lexington resident, I`m glad that we have one more specialist shop run by passionate and smiling people in the town center. Opening of Omar`s World of Comics and Hobbies attracted great attention including CBS Channel 4 and Boston Globe, perhaps yours too. President Lori, who has a son graduated LABBB Program, thanked to Patric by making a donation to End Polio in his behalf. 50/50 worth $45 was won by PP Don M. Submitted by Ugur Ergun. Best regards, Ugur Ergun

Lexington Rotarian Uger Ergun was the guest speaker. His topic was a comparison between the United States and Turkey. He explained that Turkey is a country comprised of about 80 million people. Their GDP is about 21,000 per capita, and geographically they are equivalent to the size of Texas. He suggested both countries have a passion for flags, and that both countries tend to be divided politically. Uger explained that although Turkey is mostly Muslim, they tend to practice a "milder, secular form" of the religion. He showed a photo of some students and himself at Sabanci University, where he taught prior to coming to the United States. He said the history of Turkey is rooted in two empires―the Eastern Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire. He said they have two Nobel laureates living in Turkey. Finally he pointed out that the lovely Azra Akin was crowned Miss World in 2002. The 50/50 raffle was $55, and taken home by president Lori. Respectfully submitted PP Jim Shaw

Speaker is Chief of Police Mark Corr of the Lexington Police Department. Thank you to the Chief of Police in Lexington for joining us to celebrate Dick Michelson’s life. Chief Corr expressed appreciation for the life and impact of Dick Michelson including his impact not only as a family man but a business man in the community. Mark commented on his years of service, 35, and understands the importance of being part of a family business as his father served on the force. Special memories were shared including the time both families spent celebrating the holidays. Dick was a great businessman, and displayed that with the community. Michelson’s business welcomed everyone including his own family. Dick’s passing was a community loss. We will all miss him dearly. President Lori invited Dick Michelson's daughter, Rhonda Solomon, and son, Jerry, up along with board members to award the Paul Harris Fellow to Dick celebrating his life as an outstanding citizen. This Dick's second Paul Harris Fellow his first was presented by our club to him 21 years ago on January 20, 1997 (which was also a Monday). Dick followed the motto “service above self”. Rotary Club of Lexington also made a donation in Dicks memory to the Lion’s Club International, Sight Program, a plaque was given to the family in honor of his life.

Welcome Back as Holiday Season Concludes. |
On January 7th, a relatively balmy day, 19 Rotarians and 1 guest gathered at the Lexington Golf Club for a delicious luncheon of salad, grilled shrimp, chicken, meatballs, tortellini with sun dried tomatoes, exquisitely prepared by Patty. Our guest was Deb White, a new associate at Lexington Alarm. The pledge of allegiance was led by Meghan M, one verse of America by Charlie V and the Invocation by PDG Jack M. The welcome song was also lead by Charlie V. Money was flying out of members wallets during a very busy session of fines and happy dollars. - I fined PDG Jack M $20 for bring the Artic to Lexington. He gladly paid the $20 and then threw in another $30 because he couldn’t be happier!
- PP Jim S had 10 idiot dollars for leaving the trunk of his car open during the snow storm.
- PP Dan B and PP Dan O each had 20 happy dollars for recovering from falls that resulted in broken ribs (Dan B) and head injuries (Dan O). We are glad that you are both on the mend and hope that the settlements are enormous.
- PP Nick C had happy dollars as he was only 1 day away from spending 3 months thawing out in FL.
- PP Dominic had happy dollars for talking himself into doing the Polar Plunge again this year (strange what makes some people happy).
- PP John O was fined by PP Dan B for wearing a jacket that was last in fashion during the days of Charles Dickens and is still occasionally worn by doormen at upper west side apartments in NYC. We are thinking it is a "Chesterfield".
- Last, but certainly not least, PP Don M had 100 happy dollars for selling Lexington Alarm to Wayne Alarm. Lexington Alarm will become a division of Wayne alarm as soon as Don hands over all the alarm codes he’ll be out the door. Congratulations Don and best of luck in your next endeavor.
President Lori had several announcements: - Holiday donations totaled $1246 and will be donated in person to the Hildebrand family self-help center at an upcoming meeting. Thank you all for your generosity.
- Three members of the club: President Lori, PP Susan C and PP Dominic S will be doing the polar plunge. Please go to their websites to donate.
- We will be having a visitors’ meeting at the end of February to encourage people to join the club. Start thinking about someone to invite. There will ads in the Colonial Times and pamphlets created to help promote the event. The luncheon and public image brochures will be subsidized by District grants.
- There is a new Public Image Committee, chaired by me, that as a first task will be creating brochures to encourage people to join the club.
- We are updating all member photos for the website. If you didn’t get your picture taken at this week’s meeting, wear your best clothes to the next meeting so that PP Jim S can take your photo.
Upcoming events are as follows and are also available on the Rotary app and website. - January 15: No meeting. MLK day
- January 22: Joint meeting with Lion’s Club at the Lexington Golf Club. Special presentations will be made and speakers from the town of Lexington will be on the program. Attendance is mandatory
- February 26: Visitors’ luncheon. Attendance is mandatory
Raffle donations were made by Arlex Oil Corp., Busa Wine and Spirits, PP Jim S, PP Bill C and The Rotary Club of Lexington. The 50:50 raffle was for $55 and was won by Charlie V. Respectfully PP Frank S
